Weekly Blog for 9/24

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items
discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations:

We started the week talking about the movie “Door to Door”. Students were assigned to watch this as homework
the week before. This was a true story of an inspirational man named Bill Porter. We discussed how the movie and
his perseverance showed us what is in each of us. This week we moved on to prepare for tests- including midterms.
Study groups have been a big part of the discussion. How to form them, do not go empty-handed, and to take notes
during a study group session. On Wednesday and Thursday Students demonstrated some of these skills by forming
their own study groups and working during class time.  Part of the assignment is to meet their group on their time
and discuss topics and possible questions that could be on the midterm test. Other topics of interest this week were
how to answer essay questions, multiple choice and true/ false. Students are learning how to outline/ mapping the
chapters so they will read and reread the chapters for information.
We also discussed a few times that on OCT 8th students in bowling will now go to Valuing Differences and vice versa. S
tudents need to make sure they know what room their new class meets in and the time. We will be reminding them
next week as well.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:

Last week the DILS Class finished working on careers of interest, learning about work ethic, understanding the different components involved in work ethic. The students presented through power point quotes from the interview of Will Smith and how each of his quotes regarding a strong work ethic related to each of them as individuals. This week the students are working on resumes.

Technology Literacy:

This week the THRIVE Technology Literacy class put the finishing touches on their PowerPoint presentations.
Each student created a presentation entitled "All About Me" where they used slides, bullet points, pictures
and some of the more technical elements of PowerPoint to tell the class about themselves. Presentations
will be the first week of October in the JCKL Library's Active Learning Engagement Classroom (ALEC). I'm
looking forward to seeing the final products as the students have been working very hard and have been very
focused on this project.

Relationships 101:

The week of Oct 2 is a health and relationship fair at the union on campus from 9 to 3. Students were asked to attend
at their convenience.  There will be speakers and booths with information. Today’s topic was abuse in relationships
and treatment of others. We watched together a video called “But He loves me.” The video demonstrated many “Red
Flags” in relationships. We stopped the video and discussed some of the actions on the screen at the time they were
seeing them.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I:

We are in the second habit of our book study.  Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind.  We our taking this habit and the research we are doing for their internship class and putting the two together in our discussions.   Within those discussions, the students' are discussing the research of their careers and how they will gain the training/education they may need for that particular career.

Internship I:

The students are researching a career that the student may want to pursue.  The students' have to research the skills for the career, education/training, certifications if the individual has to be certified in a particular area(s) and what the salary range may be for that career.  Once the research is done, the students will make a power point and present it to the class.

PLATO:

Students are learning that if they have not completed their time for the week before that could interfere with the soft-
ball games on Wednesday nights. Some students are working above and beyond while others struggling with time
management to complete their work. Plato report on the previous week is run on Monday morning. Plato only counts
active work on the program. If students find themselves getting distracted by other things while Plato is running, it
does not count that time. Plato is designed to help increase students’ knowledge as well as practical skills that would
be helpful later in life.  Close to the beginning of each month, the first year students are given a new assessment in
each writing, math, and reading. The assessments create a prescription based on the assessment results that the study
works on the rest of the month. Second-year students have a choice of work keys, Business writing, Reading for infor-
mation, Consumer Math, Applied Math and Locating Information.

Study Hall Times:

All THRIVE students are required to attend two assigned study halls a week. Tutors and mentors are there available to
help students with work. If a student falls behind in a class or Plato, they are required to attend mandatory study hall.
Some students have been more than 30 minutes late to study hall.  It is our goal that all students get to study hall on
time. Students are always welcome to come to study even if it’s not their assigned time but need some help with an
assignment. Study hall is Sunday 2-4 and M-TH 6-8.

THRIVE Activities:

This week's activity is  ...   The mentors will also be incorporating some activities related to homecoming.  This will help the students get ready for the homecoming event.  This may include coming up with a new theme for the back of the THRIVE T-Shirts or Door decorating worksheets to help them design their Homecoming Door theme.

Important upcoming dates:

Special Olympics Bowling- We had another Wednesday night of bowling for a couple of our students.

Slow-Pitch Softball is going well. Our team played again last night, Wednesday. It was a late one that didn't
start until 10 pm. The good thing is all students made it to class on Thursday morning, and so did staff... We
are 1 and 3 at this time, it was a close loss, but the students had fun.

This year THRIVE is a sponsor for the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City’s Step up for
Down Syndrome.  We will be putting together a team of 10 students that will go to Arrowhead Stadium to
walk for this event, held on October 20th from 10 am to 2 pm.  We are excited that we are able to do this and
see our students show support. A Google Form was sent out last Friday morning for students that want to
sign up for the team.  There are limited spots available for this activity.

Homecoming Weekend is October 27th.  Put it on your calendars.  The students have signed up for events.
They may be decorating their dorm door, helping to come up with a new theme for our THRIVE T-Shirts,
Helping with the Spirit Window, Donating Blood, Bowling, Pep Rally, Magician at Hendricks Hall, and getting
ready for the parade on Saturday morning of Homecoming Week.

Athletics to watch: Women's Volleyball, Cross-Country, and Mules Football start up later this month.
