Weekly Blog for Week 10/29

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items
discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the
THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations:

This week we have begun a large end of semester paper. Students will end up with several
pages of their own life story.  It encourages students to investigate how their personal history,
attitudes and beliefs and about their ability might be influencing the way they think about
themselves and their goals for themselves. We worked on metaphors. I asked students to do
some research or write their own metaphor about their life. Students could also use one they
like from the internet.  Discussed was the difference between metaphor and a simile but for
this assignment we were not going to worry about that distinction. Students were assigned to
go to the learning lab to help them write a page on the metaphor and how it relates to their life.
Students can choose more than one if that works for them. Students also listed people and
events they felt had an impact on their life. Students were told if it was a negative impact it was
up to them to include it or not. We will use this information in the upcoming weeks.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:

DILS has been focusing on Careers. The students are to make a powerpoint and an imovie that relates
to their career. The students will be presenting their power points and imovies.  We have been talking
about how to manage their time to study for finals without becoming overwhelmed.

Technology Literacy:

In Tech, we've started working on final projects. They are in the middle of a Library Reflection paper and
are also working on an iMovie trailer which will be their final project for our class.

Relationships 101:

We finished up discussing some important topics a couple needed to cover before marriage.
And began discussion what is it takes to create a strong family. Some of the topics covered was
the importance of spending time together, showing appreciation to others, and communication
in relationships.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I:

We are discussing Habit 5 ( Seek first to understand, then to be understood) and Habit 6 ( Synergize).
We are starting to review for the final which will be over the 7 Habits book. We continue to discuss
building relationships, positive communication and body language.

Internship I:

The students are setting up their first mock interviews this week.  The students will have a second mock
interview during finals week. During the mock interviews the students need to dress like a regular
interview, have materials ready for the interview and use professional communication skills that they
have been learning about.

PLATO:

All students will have new assessments for the month of November that will start on Monday
November 5. Students should do the best they can because this sets the prescription for
learning the rest of the month. This will be the last assessments for this semester.

THRIVE Activities:

Fall Finals:
First-Year finals are during the week of November 26th.  Yes, the week that they get back from
Thanksgiving break.  Since most of the first-year students classes are in the THRIVE classroom we give
them their finals the week before the rest of the students.  This gives a quieter atmosphere for the
2nd-year students and the Mentors. The teachers will be letting the students know when their finals will
be in the next week or so.  This will help you plan out picking them up for their Winter break.

Second-Year finals are during finals week, the week of December 3rd.  The finals are already planned
and online at the following weblink. You’ll want to get with your student to verify when they can leave for
Winter Break.

Spring Semester Classes:
Are set up and your student should know what class they have signed up for.  If you have any questions
please get with them first, then if you need more information get with Mrs. Southard-First-Year and Dr.
Manning: Second-Year.

Hunting this weekend:
This weekend the students took part in a scavenger hunt that Leigha designed.  Here are some pictures.
Great job students!!

Important upcoming dates:

Thanksgiving Break/End of Semester:
I wanted to get with parents about Thanksgiving week.  The university will not have classes the week of
November 19th.  This will mean that the students will need to be picked up on Friday the 16th, after
classes.  The students will receive noticed on what they need to do during this time. Then the students
will need to be back on campus on November 25th, so that they can be in classes on the 26th.  Please
read the next section about students finals and end of the semester thoughts. You’ll want to get with your
student on when they have their finals set up through OAS. But, Friday afternoon they should be finished
with finals, Friday the 30th.  Then We’ll see them next semester on Sunday the 13th back to the dorms.
First-Year students:
First-Year students will have classes as normal, but will also have their end of semester finals
during this week.  The finals will be as follows:
University Foundations will be on Friday.
DILS class will be on Thursday
Technology will be through-out the week
Bowling/Valuing Differences will be scheduled by their UCM instructor during this
week.
Second-Year students:
Second-Year students will have Finals during finals week, December 3rd - 7th.  You will want to
talk to your student to see when their last final is taken. They may also have their internship during this time.  We’ll be getting with these students the week before Thanksgiving Break to make sure they have a plan in place and have set up OAS appointments for finals.  Since each student will set up their finals with OAS, some students may be able to go home earlier, depending on internship hours.

Athletics to watch: Women's Volleyball, Cross-Country, and Mules Football.
