1/22 Weekly Blog

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills:

Monday was Martin Luther King Day. We had Spring Open house. The students that stayed on campus attended both sessions. Several students were nice enough to let some parents see their dorm rooms.  Campus classes were canceled Wednesday morning due to the weather. Students will present their iMovies next week.

Learning Strategies:

The topic for the week was intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. We discussed the definition as well has what distracts students.  Students should be reading the first chapter in the textbook. If a student has not received a pdf document from the OAS office they need to schedule a meeting in that office. Also if any student has gotten a new computer over Christmas students may need to go over to OAS and have them set their laptop to read the text to them.

Personal Math:

Personal Math has been working on the following:
Where Does Your Money Go? Students have been keeping track of their personal expense record on a weekly basis.

Learning Objectives:
Tell the difference between needs and wants
Prepare and analyze expense record
Identify variable and fixed expenses
Find the amount of income left after paying fixed expenses

Math Skills:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide with money
Round money amounts to the nearest cent.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II:

We have started our budget activity project this week.  I do not think the students realize how fast money goes when you have to pay rent, utility bills, cell phone, food and etc...   We will continue this project for a couple of months. The students will also be working on teamwork activities, critical thinking skills, and relationships.

Internship II:

The second-year students are in full swing in their internships.  Each student is working around 20 hours a week with their different internships.  This is a picture of one of our students working at the Gaines Building in the automotive tool shop.

Along with their internship hours the students have to do a weekly internship log, update their professional development plans and resumes.

PLATO:

Plato students are doing great. Several students work behind the required time. Students took new assessments for the month of January. Students really stepped it up a notch most students increased the grade levels just by taking their time on their assessments. Great Job!!

Study Time:

We have continued to be impressed with the students coming into the classroom on their own.  Tonight, for instance, it’s 4:20 and we still have 4 students that are studying. Great job!!

THRIVE Activities:

Cooking this weekend: I hear they are making Tacos.  Look they do know how to cook!!

Important upcoming dates:

Athletics to watch:  Men’s and Women’s Basketball games are on.  UCM Mules Wrestling also has some matches in the coming weeks.  Towards the middle of March, the Baseball team will also start their games.

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Ping Pong, Dodgeball, and Softball sign up sheets were in the THRIVE classroom this week.  The students can also look to their Spring Student Activities calendar that was left for them the first week. We also have copies in the THRIVE Classroom.
