Spring-Week 1/28

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills:

Monday students showed their iMovie’s, each group was to create a trailer iMovie illustrating workplace issues that we discussed in class. The rest of the class was spent discussing job shadowing, dress code, expectations, and locations. Wednesday student’s participated in team building activities. Dr. Manning reserved the gym in the rec center and students participated in several exercises.

On Wednesday I caught the class working on team building skills in the gym.  Here are a couple of pictures. I’ll place more on our Facebook page.
More pictures from Dr. Manning…

Learning Strategies:

We are preparing for chapter 1 test. Students have been asked to get in study groups and begin reviewing the chapter. Recommended was to identify key terms in the chapter usually illustrated by bold print. Also, re-read the chapter, create index cards to review and review the questions at the end of the chapter. Discussed was to create their own set of possible questions and go over the powerpoint for the chapter.  We also have been working on creating to-do lists. Each student has their own way they make their lists which is best for them. Students were asked to review their commitment calendars and make changes if needed.

Personal Math:

Continuing from last week.  I’ll have more on next week’s post.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II:

We continue to work on real-life budget situations and how we have to make certain choices on budget items to make sure we do not spend more money than we have in our income.  This goes along with talking about the transition from college graduation to jobs and living arrangements. The discussions in class with the students about budgets and transitions are interesting, funny, stressful and nervousness for the students.

Internship II:

Internship II class - Students have made appointments at the UCM career service office.  during this appointment, students will have the Career Service staff look at their resumes, cover letters, and professional development plans.  The students will also be discussing job searches, mock interviews, and networking.

PLATO:

A few students were required to attend study hall this week due to not completing all their plato hours the week before.

Study Time:

We are still impressed by the number of students coming into the classroom on their own.  I actually had to ask them to leave when I left this last week. Great job!!

THRIVE Activities:

This weekend the students will be having an activity outside.  It looks like Wiffle Ball. It all depends on the weather. I’ll have pictures next week.  You might also watch the Facebook page as the mentors may post there before I get it to the Blog.

Important upcoming dates:

THRIVE Interviews are starting...
We are starting our THRIVE interviews for next year’s cohort so the students may have some alternate work to do while we use the room for our interviews.  Students will also need to email any concerns or questions instead of coming in on most days. Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning have given the students instructions about what to do.

Athletics to watch:  Men’s and Women’s Basketball games are on.  UCM Mules Wrestling also has some matches in the coming weeks.  Towards the middle of March, the Baseball team will also start their games.

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Softball sign up sheets are in the THRIVE classroom this week.  The students can also look to their Spring Student Activities calendar that was left for them the first week. We also have copies in the THRIVE Classroom.
