First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills:

This weeks topic was problem-solving and critical thinking. Dr. Manning taught these lessons this week. While Mrs. Southard inserted information.  Discussed were the importance of these skills in every job. Examples were presented in class and ways to solve problems. Dr. Manning gave several examples of ways students have demonstrated problem-solving skills in the past. Also covered was the need for this skill at all levels from the boss to the employees.

Learning Strategies:

Several students were absent due to illness on Monday.  We worked on our to-do list for the week. Also covered was the assignments in Chapter 3. Several students voiced they had tests on this Friday. We discussed ways to study. We took notes using Powerpoint and guided notes. In college, it is up to the student to contact the instructor when a student is absent and get their work completed. Students were assigned daily homework on time management in Chapter 3.

Personal Math:

Personal Math has been working on Budget, Estimating Money, What Happens in Emergencies, Finding an Average, How Do You Spend Extra Money?, Review and Test scheduled for 3/14/19.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II:

This week we have been discussing problem-solving skills in the workplace and in daily lives.  We have used different situations that the students have to analysis and then discuss as a class.   A lot of the discussion is on how we communicate to someone and how we perceive body language.
-  Furthermore, we have been discussing that the semester is almost over, but we still need to finish strong and take care of our business as UCM students.

Internship II:

Students were working on their 3-page mid-term paper.  The paper was on what they have learned. Observed and how they would problem solve in a difficult situation at their internship.  Furthermore, the students have been asking for a letter of references from individuals that are not related to them. These letters will go into their professional file and used when the student applies for jobs.  In their professional record, the students have a resume, cover letter, reference letters, references, and their professional development plan.

PLATO:

Students completed their February prescriptions. March assessments were completed.  Monday the writing assessment was completed, Tuesday was math, and Wednesday was the reading assessment. Students were to finish this in order. Students that did not complete on a timely manner was asked to attend study hall.

Study Time:

We still have some students come into the classroom to study.  Great job!! Nash enjoys seeing how he can help…

THRIVE Activities:

This weekend the students did the following activity.
This weekend we had a Game Day.  The students were able to pick board games that they were able to play.

Important upcoming dates:

Spring Break: Is coming up quickly.  The students will be released this Friday, March 15th.  They have to be out of the dorms by 6 pm. They should’ve had this information on their doors last week.  Then they can start coming back to campus on Sunday, March 24th at Noon. I’ll email parents a copy of the document later on Monday in an email.  There is a $50 charge if the tasks are not completed. So please make sure your students have started on this before Friday when you are picking them up.  We will do the same.

Graduation items: Yes, I’ll be getting details and dates put together over the next month for our THRIVE graduates and families.  The Commencement date is May 11th from 10-12. We’ll then have a THRIVE Reception and presentation of THRIVE Certificates of Success to the new Graduates, from 12:30 - 3:30.  This is an exciting time, and Mr. Brunkhorst will be sending out emails to 2nd-year students and their families in the coming weeks to start getting a count of how many will be attending.  I’ll have more information I’ll email 2nd-year families closer to the date.

Athletics to watch:  Men’s and Women’s Basketball games are completed, the Jennies should be playing in the post-season, so the students should be able to listen to games.   UCM Mules Wrestling also has some matches in the coming weeks. Towards the middle of March, the Baseball team will also start their games.

Also the students can participate in Intramural Athletics:
  • We had enough students to have a Spring Softball team.  I’ll keep you updated on the dates of the games.
  • The students can also look to their Spring Student Activities calendar that was left for them the first week.  We also have copies in the THRIVE Classroom.
