First-Year Students: Workplace & Community Skills: This week we are beginning to see the end of the tunnel. We discussed how the final week will work. Students will not have classes but will have a schedule to follow to take their finals. Students will not be required to attend extra activities, and all students should be using their time wisely studying and preparing for finals. Students need to arrange a time to meet with Mrs. Southard to turn in all their textbooks and iPads. They also need to email all instructors to let us know what time and day they are planning on leaving. Discussed Wednesday and Friday were soft skills all employers are looking for in employees. First-Year Students: Workplace & Community Skills: Covered this week was a lesson on the determination. The importance of being a self-advocate and decision making was discussed. Wednesday Mr. Brunkhorst demonstrated how to use Missouri Connections web site and work on a program called a reality check. This was very enlightening to students as to how much it will cost to live on their own. Students continued working on the program on Friday. Each student figured their personal estimated cost of living. Students wrote a paragraph about their findings. First-Year Students: Workplace & Community Skills: The students were continuing to work on finalizing their resumes, thank you letters and start on their cover letters for their internships. Learning Strategies: Monday Mrs. Southard was gone to a conference and Dr. Manning took over.  Students were to turn in Chapter 7 word search and begin working on Chapter 7 vocabulary and questions at the end of the chapter. The way the textbook is set up makes it difficult to find answers. So students worked together discussing the assignments. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. First-Year Students: Workplace & Community Skills: Monday Mr. Brunkhorst taught the class. Students worked on Missouri Connections a web site that helps students review careers. Students worked on finishing up resumes and wrote a cover letter. Mrs. Southard explained where the Career Center is located on Campus and assigned students to visit next week to finalize both their resumes and cover letters.  Everyone finished up the last job shadowing experience. Each Student went to one location on campus or in the community. Some of the job shadowing experiences included Dr. Berry, Veterinarian, Trails Regional Library and the R.I.S.E. Shop Downtown. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. First-Year Students: Workplace & Community Skills: Monday started busier than ever. Dr. Manning discussed updating their resumes and cover letters. Students were instructed to make an appointment with Dr. Manning this week to discuss classes for next year and internships. He went over what a cover letter was and should include. Wednesday discussed was the difference between criticism, praise and feedback and how to react to each of them. Also covered was how to choose your words carefully when in a work environment. Becoming more descriptive in emails, homework and job interviews. Topics on Wednesday included behaviors on social media affecting jobs and careers. We are going to increase our tim...
