9/16 Blog Post

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations :

Monday we went over a list of distractions. The students' listed items they struggled with. We discussed how to deal with each distraction.  Students were reminded to use the activity app in order to earn discussion board points each week. Students were assigned reading chapter 3 this week. Mrs. Southard demonstrated how to outline the chapter. Students learned how to take notes on chapter 3 using notability. We discussed the importance of time management. Students checked their grades on Blackboard and reviewed how to check on assignments using edmodo.com. Everyone was reminded to check their emails 4 times a day. Several students are not referring to their to-do list. Thursday an assignment was due that many did not turn in.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:

This week the DILS class finished a unit on alcohol and college life. The students were surprised by what they didn't know about alcohol and its dangers. We then started a unit on healthy eating in college using resources on  https://www.choosemyplate.gov/college-resources. The students will be keeping a food journal for a few days next week (shhhh....I haven't told them this yet).

Technology Literacy:

Tech Lit was dedicated to learning about web safety. We talked about how to create strong passwords, what it means to be "hacked," and how to protect our passwords. We also download the app Notability to their iPads so they can see lecture notes and make notes and highlights right on the touch screen. This should save printing costs and allow them easier access to study materials for their THRIVE courses.

Relationships 101:

We are starting a two week topic of Dating. Topics this week were: to go for a date. How to ask someone for a date. How to start dating.  Who pays for the date? Also, some dating rules were discussed.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I:

Students have started meeting Career Service Advisers this week.  This gives the students an opportunity to update their resumes and cover letters.  The students will also get signed up for "Handshake", which is a search engine for jobs.  This search engine has jobs listed nationally and jobs in multiple categories. We will continue to utilize the Career Service Office throughout this semester and the spring semester.
- The students are working on Professional; Development Plans(PDP).  Their rough draft is due on Oct. 4th. The PDP has the students discuss their career and personal aspirations/goals, strengths, things to improve on and objectives and how to accomplish these objectives/goals.

Internship I:

All students are doing well at their internships.  The students definitely have to use their time management skills with their internships.  Their internships have students working nights, weekends and sometimes 8 hour days. Their internships are realistic with having a job.  We believe this helps the students to understand what it is like to have a part-time/full-time job.
- Here in about a month, I will sit down with each student to discuss what the student would like their spring internship to be.  Each student gives us three choices and then we make the contacts with the business if that business/organization will take an intern.

Plato:

Students are working on Plato. Most are doing well. Some need a reminder.

THRIVE Activities:

Mentor Activities: It’s Cooking with Claire-
This past weekend Jesse had the kids doing all types of games on the soccer field.  Look at them go! For more pictures and activities please go to our Facebook page.

Two weekends ago, Claire, had the students learn how to make bread.  It looks like they enjoyed the time and the bread.

Important upcoming dates:

Down Syndrome Guild Walk: For the 2nd year THRIVE is a sponsor for the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City’s Step up for Down Syndrome.  We will be putting together a team of 10 students that will go to Arrowhead Stadium to walk for this event, held on October 26th from 10 am to 2 pm.  We are excited that we are able to do this and see our students show support. We have 13 signed up. I’ll be contacting the students to confirm this today, so I can get them registered.

Softball:
We had enough players to sign up for a softball team for the fall semester.Ok.  We received word on Thursday that we have been switched to Monday night games. Our games are either 7 pm or 8 pm.  The students that have signed up and passed the softball quiz can play, as long as they don’t have mandatory study hall.... All games are are the South Complex off of Highway DD.  If you need directions please email me and I’ll send the address to you.
Here are the game times.  The students will be driven to the field by THRIVE Staff about 30 minutes before game time.

Here are some pictures from last week’s game.  This week was canceled due to wet fields. Thank you to all the parents and volunteers that came out to cheer us on.

Special Olympics group to be on UCM Campus:
We have a group from Special Olympics attending UCM in late October.  We will have a couple of students help with giving tours of campus and will also have a group of students help with an activity in the evening.  We’ll be talking more to the students as we get more information.

Family Day: Family Day is this weekend.  We will have a THRIVE activity that weekend along with activities across campus.  I’ll be updating as we know more. Unfortunately, I have a nephew getting married in Colorado so you will have to enjoy your time on campus without me.
The students can also try out for the Talent show a few weeks prior for a chance to be in the Talent show.   Here is a link to the events that they had last year. They are in the process of getting this year’s events scheduled but should give you an idea.

Homecoming Weekend is October 12th  Put it on your calendars.  The students will be able to participate in several activities.  Blood Drive, Corn Toss (Instead of Bowling), Cheer Competition, Spirit Window, Door Decorating, THRIVE student Dance, and the Parade on Saturday morning.  The sign-up sheets are in the classroom. We will have a float that the students help with and the students walk in the parade.
