THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations- We watched a video by Will Smith about 10 steps to being successful. Students completed a paper this week on what success looks like to them. Also turned in was a one page paper on a career where students researched a career of their choice discovering pay, tasks involved, seasonal or not and educational requirements. Friday students turned in an outline for the chapter. We talked about emotional intelligence and social filters. We defined the word congruent. Asking if each student's behavior was going in the same direction as their vision, and goals for the future.

Daily Independent Living Skills - Students worked individually this week researching a career. Students could use some of the information from the University Foundations class on this project. Students were to make a google file folder and share it with Mrs. Garnier. As they located the requested information students were to put that in the folder. This assignment is due Tuesday, November 12.

Technology Literacy-
This week in Tech, the students were to experiment with some technology on their phones.  They were to look at different accessibility options that their phones had to see if there were any that they liked.  Then write a paper about it. Mr. Brunkhorst helped fill in for Mrs. Garnier and the students started by doing a draft with an introductory paragraph and then added 3 paragraphs about their choices of accessibility options.  Then after trying the options out over a couple of days, they added their thoughts about the options. Finally, they added a concluding paragraph and turned it in on Friday afternoon, by 5 pm.

Relationships class- We continued our talk about engagement and marriage. This week focusing more on marriage and getting along with others. Students took a quiz about what kind of marriage they want relating to marriage roles. Some students indicated they wanted a traditional marriage while others felt a more equal division of household chores would be best for them.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: We continue to discuss the 7 Habits book on Habit 5 - “Think Win-Win”.  Within this habit, we discussed the four categories of this habit. Win-Lose; Lose-Win, Lose-Lose; and Win-Win. We try to strive for the Win-Win, were we compromise with each other to help everyone.  We as individuals sometimes have a hard time with the Win-Win category. We always think that we need to win and someone may need to lose.

Internship I:  Today in class we started our mock interviews.  Mr. Brunkhowst interviewed Dr. Manning in front of the class.  One of the interviews was an unprofessional interview and Dr. Manning did everything wrong during the interview.  The second interview was a professional interview, utilizing professional dress and communication skills. The students will do their first mock interview the week of Nov. 18th - 22nd.

Plato-  All students had new assessments this week. Students were reminded to take their time. Some students rushed through them which can create a prescription for the month that could be hard or easy for the student.

THRIVE Activities:

MIPSA:
On Monday the staff and four of our students participated in our Fall MISPA conference at Springfield where Bear Power Program is housed.  Our Keynote speaker was from Charleston where they have a four-year program similar to THRIVE. We learned how they help train their faculty to work with students in the program.  Then we participated in our MIPSA board meeting to hear about some new ideas.

Mentor Activities:
Cooking with Leigha: Tacos was the cooking activity this weekend.  Here are a few of the pictures.

Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook.  So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
