THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills (Mrs. Southard & Dr. Manning):

Monday students were shown how to look at classes for next fall. Students were asked to find 5 classes they felt could be possibilities. They were to email the list of Dr. Manning and Mrs. Southard. Students will only take one class. Dr. Manning will be meeting with each student to narrow down their choices. We want to pick the right class for each student based on their interest in the field. Also, Some of the classes may coincide with other THRIVE classes they are taking. So there are several things to consider when selecting a class. Students were asked to discuss class selection with their parents. Wednesday students were reminded of their second job shadowing experience coming up. Friday students were asked to work on Missouri Connections. Students completed the “Reality Check.” Where students got to select how they would live in the future. With a roommate or alone, Car or take the bus Eating and shopping habits were included.  At the end of all the questions, it gave a total of how much money they would need a year to live as they had chosen. We discussed the high cost of being an adult. Every time the students swipe their card they are spending parents money.

Learning Strategies (Mrs. Southard):

Chapter 2 Goals was the topic all week. We discussed how reaching a goal takes planning and taking a step in the directions and not putting it off. Discussed was regrets some people have when they get older and didn't try something. It's better to try something and not work out them to have never tried to do it. Students worked on posters this week illustrating some goals they have. An example was shown. Friday we finished Chapter 2 notes and discussed assignments coming up for the week ahead. We also discussed the successes each student has had and how hard each of them is working.

Personal Math (Mrs. Garnier): We finished Unit 1: Budgeting last week, so on Tuesday this week we reviewed for our unit 1 test and they took the test on Thursday. Next week we start Unit 2: Banking. We’ll learn about checking accounts, savings accounts, balancing accounts, types of banks, and the different services banks offer. Overall, the students are doing well in Math so far and seem to be enjoying learning “real-life Math.”

Here is a picture of them studying for their upcoming math test...

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II (Dr. Manning):  Our counselor in training (Mel) did a presentation on anxiety/stress.  The presentation was very informative for the students about what may cause stress/anxiety and how to work through stressful situations and anxiety.

We continue to work on our budget project. Now the students have to make their own budget.  They have a monthly income of $1900.00/month before taxes. Their rough draft budget is very interesting on how they believe they will spend their money.

Internship II (Dr. Manning): The students’ internship hours/days may change due to their weekly counseling meetings.  The students and I will work with their internship supervisor to switch anything around that we need too.

I sent out the students’ internship progress reports to their supervisors this week.  We should start getting those reports back next week. These reports help guide the students in their workplace skills and professional skills.

Here are some pictures of some of the students in action this week at their internships…

PLATO (Mrs. Southard): Students are working hard on plato. Almost everyone had it done from the previous week.

THRIVE Activities:

Claire had the weekend activity and had the students making wraps.  Here are some pictures.

One of our students also made the UCM Bookstore Employee top pick of the week!  Great job Olivia!

Important upcoming dates:

Interviews for next year’s cohort of 2022:  Just FYI for parents.  During the last week of February, we’ll be having family interviews for next year’s cohort.  During this time some THRIVE classes may not meet. If we schedule an interview during class time the students will have group classwork to do during this week.  The teachers will make sure that the students are aware and each group will meet during the days that their class would’ve met.

Athletics to watch:  Men’s and Women’s Basketball games are on.  UCM Mules Wrestling also has some matches in the coming weeks.  Towards the middle of March, the Baseball team will also start their games.  I’ve also copied activities to the students’ 2019 Activity Calendar (Google) that they can access and prepare for.

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
