Week 2/10 Blog...Yes, I was able to post early this week.
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills (Mrs. Southard & Dr. Manning): Monday students were reminded to complete their paragraph on their first job shadowing experience. It was due Wednesday. Classroom discussion centered around the observations they made at job shadowing. Professionalism, attire, shaking hands were covered. Wednesday students work on a thank you letter addressed to the person they job shadowed.
Learning Strategies (Mrs. Southard):
Monday students took their first on-line quiz. Everyone worked together. All students earned full credit. Students got to experience what it is like to take an on-line test and discussed what resources they could use during working on an online test. Wednesday's discussion centered around the advantages of taking a test like this and reviewed what to do to set themselves up for success. We moved on to Chapter 2 Goal setting. We discussed the difference between long and short term goals. Took notes on notability and watch Zig Ziglar on goal setting. We finished the week discussing how having a goal can increase success and performance.
Mrs. Southard had them doing an activity on Friday. Looked like fun.
Personal Math (Mrs. Garnier): We are finishing up our unit on budgeting and review of money, addition, and subtraction. We have practiced filling out W4 forms and learning what they are for as well as analyzing a pay stub to learn concepts of gross pay, net pay, deductions, and benefits. Their final budgeting assignment is analyzing a budget and calculating how the “family” can revise their expenditures in order to have money to put into short-term and long-term savings. This involves calculating the percentages of income for a variety of budget categories. I’m extremely pleased with the students’ work on this unit. We are looking forward to the next unit of banking.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II (Dr. Manning): We continue to discuss the transition from college to independent living. The students are formulating their monthly budget. A monthly budget is about choices and wants/needs. The students are realizing that they may not have enough money at the end of the month to pay for everything. Therefore, the students are cutting their budgets and making choices.
Another assignment, the students had to research transportation in their hometown. How would the students get to certain places if parents/families could not take them? The students realize they may have to walk, ride a bike, use public transportation.
Internship II (Dr. Manning): At mid-term the students’ internship days/hours may change. With students’ meetings, classes and appointments may change therefore internships may change.
The students are very busy with working on different events on campus for their internships. One student has been video recording UCM basketball games, another student was working the career fair on campus and a couple of other students had to work a little longer because of campus tours.
PLATO (Mrs. Southard): All students completed their Plato from the previous week. That was great. Mrs. Southard celebrated!
THRIVE Activities:
Sushma and the students completed heart-shaped pillows for the shelter in town. They all had assistance from Mrs. Manning for this project. Thank you, Mrs. Manning!!

Important upcoming dates:
Interviews for next year’s cohort of 2022: Just FYI for parents. During the last week of February, we’ll be having family interviews for next year’s cohort. During this time some THRIVE classes may not meet. If we schedule an interview during class time the students will have group classwork to do during this week. The teachers will make sure that the students are aware and each group will meet during the days that their class would’ve met.
Athletics to watch: Men’s and Women’s Basketball games are on. UCM Mules Wrestling also has some matches in the coming weeks. Towards the middle of March, the Baseball team will also start their games. I’ve also copied activities to the students’ 2019 Activity Calendar (Google) that they can access and prepare for.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
