THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills (Mrs. Southard & Dr. Manning):

Students this week did their second job shadowing. Some of the places they went to included the rec center, Foster Knox daycare, Safe team, lifetime animal center, and OAS office. Students rotated around so they were not in the same location as their first experiences. Students were assigned to write thank-you letters and a reflection paper about each experience.

Learning Strategies (Mrs. Southard):

Monday students were expected to complete homework. The class was canceled that day due to interview candidates for next year. Chapter 2 test was online and it was open all week. Students could take it as many times as they like to work on increasing their score. Also, it was highly suggested they use their textbook along with taking the test with a friend. They could also have the help of the mentors and volunteers during the study hall. Wednesday Mr. Brunkhorst taught the class and demonstrated the many uses of notability to students. Friday we started chapter 3 on Time management.

Personal Math (Mrs. Garnier): We started our unit on banking this week. We will be learning how to read bank statements and how to reconcile them. Understanding checking accounts, savings accounts, and calculating interest are just a few things we will be covering in the next few weeks.

Due to an interview in the THRIVE Suite Mrs. Garnier had the class changed to another room in Lovinger.  Students are getting ready to learn more math skills!!!

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II (Dr. Manning):  The students have some assignments coming up that the students need to work on.  One assignment is that the student needs to make contact with Vocational Rehab in their area and to discuss utilizing the resources that are available to them from this organization.

The students continue to fine-tune their monthly budget.  Some of the students have overspent on their monthly income.  Now the students have to make some cuts to their expenses.

Students are getting ready for Dr. Manning’s class on Thursday morning.  Some are here as early as 7:30 am!!

Internship II (Dr. Manning): The student had to submit a list of 5 businesses/organizations that they would like to apply at over the next couple of weeks.  The students have to apply at three of those businesses by March 20th. The students should have their resumes and cover letters ready to submit to those businesses when they apply.

The students had to do a self-reflection on how they think they are doing at their internships.  This is the same form their supervisors use to evaluate them. Myself and the student will meet to discuss their self-evaluation and the evaluation that their supervisor submitted.

PLATO (Mrs. Southard): Students are working hard on plato. As reminder students need to write down on Monday morning the time they start on each so they can better keep track of the time for the week.

THRIVE Activities:

This weekend Jesse had designed a scavenger hunt.  Here are some pictures. It looks like lots of fun...

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
