First-Year Students:

University Foundations & Relationships 101: Debra Southard

Hello, Welcome to THRIVE. I received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Central Missouri in 2003. I also earned my Bachelor of Science in Education from UCM. I have lived in Warrensburg for over 40 years. I have taught Family and Consumer Science for 25 years. This is my third year with the THRIVE program. I teach primarily first year THRIVE students. I am the administrator of PLATO, an online classroom program that all students will work on. I meet regularly with the first year students to help with organization skills, class assignments and any other concerns they might have. First semester I am teaching University of Foundations, a class that focuses on what it is like to attend college, behavior expectations and how to study for homework and test. On Friday’s I teach a Relationship course. Some of the topics include: friendships, red flags in relationships, how to start dating, making good choices and getting along with others. I also am in contact with every student’s professor outside of thrive. I make sure our students are attending classes and turning in all their work to the best of their ability.

Daily & Independent Living Skills & Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Hello!  My name is Lisa Garnier.  I teach Technology Literacy and DILS (Daily and Independent Living Skills) to first-year students in the THRIVE Program.  I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in English from UCM and a Master of Arts degree in English from UCM.  I have taught at the high school and collegiate levels for 20 years and am also a freelance writer.  I’ve worked with students with disabilities at Metropolitan Community Colleges-Longview Campus and taught developmental writing courses at both MCC-Longview and State Fair Community College in Sedalia.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I & Internship I: Gary Manning

Internship - The students are all being set up on their internships and some of them have started already.   Their supervisors are looking forward to having the students at their organizations.  The internships will be a great learning experience for the students.  The students may get frustrated at times with their internships but that is part of the process.

Transition - We will be starting our book study this week.  The book is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.  We will utilize this book throughout the semester.  We will also be discussing professional communication skills.  The students hopefully will use these skills in class, at their internships, during meetings, in the dorms and when they are talking to individuals.

THRIVE Activities:

During Early Move-In we had some activities and classes to help orient the students.  I’ve include some pictures below.  If you haven’t gone to our Facebook page- UCM -THRIVE.please do so.  We try to use the page to help families stay in touch with what their students are doing.  The posts may be classes, internships, activities, or just some pictures from around campus.

These are just a few of the activities that they were involved in, for more go to our Facebook page.

Mentor Activities: Scavenger Hunt and more...

We also had some students go out on their own and also some Sunday morning activities.

Great Job Mentors!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook page.

Important upcoming dates:

August 22-First Cooking Activity Group.  The students that are involved have already accepted the invitation.  I’ll let you see what they did next week.

September 7th-No School for Labor Day.  The students will not have Sunday afternoon Study Hall this weekend.  This will give students the opportunity to go home or have time to refresh.  There will be Monday night study hall, so students that have Monday night study hall will either need to be back by 6 or make prior arrangements to do another night.
