First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

First day of College was exciting.Monday Students learned how to do Google Hangout, and Plato. Some students were reminded they  had a study hall tonight. Text books were passed out. Some students were reminded they had their first meeting with Mrs. Southard today. Tuesday and Wednesday topics included the difference between academic dishonesty and getting help. Students were asked to send an email to Mrs. Southard listed 5 things they have learned. Thursday Public Safety was here to discuss sexual harassment. Friday we took a tour of the Learning Commons in the library.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:  Lisa Garnier

DILS met for the first time this semester on Tuesday. I explained what to expect in class and that each week we will cover topics in Careers, Personal Safety, Health & Wellness, and Personal Finance. The rest of the week we spent completing several assessments regarding those topics, so I can focus instruction on skills they need and not on skills they already have.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

In Tech Lit, we learned how to navigate Blackboard and email etiquette. Students were assigned a discussion board topic as a way of introducing them to that function in Blackboard. We also viewed a PowerPoint presentation on email etiquette and discussed the appropriate format for a “professional” email such as they might send to an instructor, business, or employer. Their assignment is to send me an email on Sunday evening telling me what they did on their first weekend at thrive.

University Foundations & Relationships 101: Debra Southard

We talked about casual, close and acquaintance friendships. What characteristics make a good relationship and what behaviors can end a friendship.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

First couple of days of classes have gone well.  On Tuesday we discussed what the expectations are during this class and the different activities the students will need to accomplish as we go through the semester.  On Thursday we had Title IX training with Heather Jennings and Gary Schmidt.  This is great information that our students need to have not only when they are on campus but when they are doing their internships or off campus.

Internship I: Gary Manning

Most internships are starting this week.  Our students are in great locations this semester and their supervisors are eager to have the students working with them.  We are still working on schedules and making sure we have all paperwork turned in.  Hopefully by next week will have all the students working at their internships throughout the week.  We want the students to work 15 - 20 hours per week at their internships.  If the student is not working 15 - 20 hours per week, we may have to make some adjustments on their internships.  We have had this discussion in class and the students understand.

Plato: Debra Southard

All students have new assessments. They were asked to do their best. And reminded they needed 2 hours of each subject a week. Also explained was the need for students to take their time on the assessments. Students are able to Google answers or use calculates when needed.

THRIVE Activities:

Mentor Activities: Cooking with Savanna-

This weekend Savanna had them making Pizza Roll Ups.  A big thank you goes to Taylor who helped shop for the items this week!  Here are some of the pictures.

We also had some students go out on their own and also some Sunday morning activities.

Great Job Mentors!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook page.

Important upcoming dates:

August 22-First Cooking Activity Group.  The students that are involved have already accepted the invitation.  I’ll let you see what they did next week.

September 7th-No School for Labor Day.  The students will not have Sunday afternoon Study Hall this weekend.  This will give students the opportunity to go home or have time to refresh.  There will be a Monday night study hall, so students that have Monday night study hall will either need to be back by 6 or make prior arrangements to do another night.
