THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

Please remember, part of our program is working on students doing more on their own.  Please let their teacher Mrs. Southard (first-Year) or Dr. Manning (second-year) know if your son/daughter is still asking you for lots of help with homework.  We have mentors in the dorms and are starting to add multiple volunteers in the study halls and other times, as well.  It’s great to see how much the students can start doing on their own when they have to do things themselves.  Thank you for your assistance with this.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This is the fourth week. Students should be remembering assignments. Monday students demonstrated in class their ability to complete the discussion board. All students were asked to show Mrs. Southard where the activity app button is on their iPad and how to use it.  Students have been struggling to remember to use the app. Some assignments are due every week. Plato, discussion board while others are new assignments.  Students took a test last week in Chapter 1. This week we will begin talking about Time management.  Some students are doing well with time management. Mr. Brunkhorst taught students how to save powerpoints on their google drive and then upload them to notability.  All students purchased this app before school started. Students also joined Edmodo. A website to get updates on assignments.

Relationships 101: Debra Southard

Conflict resolution was the topic this week. Students read some scenarios and asked how to solve the problem. We watched a short video called The Blind man and the Elephant about seeing different perspectives on the same topic. Students were also reminded of some of the earlier topics: Friendships and how long it takes to have a lasting friendship or relationship.

Homework assigned.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

The topic has been paradigms of life from the 7 Habits book:  self-center, stuff-center, family-center, school-center, friend-center, boyfriend/girlfriend-center.  We discussed if your life is just centered around one thing, then your life is not in balance.  Further, we discussed having tough conversations with parents/family, friends, and boyfriend/girlfriend about relationships, jobs, independence, and responsibility.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We have started our initial professional development plan (PDP).  This is a plan that students come up with about their goals, strengths, things they want to improve on, their interest in jobs and how they will accomplish their goals.  With the PDP, we have to have conversations about what it will take to accomplish their goals and how to pursue these objectives.  We want their goals to be realistic and relevant.

Plato: Debra Southard

Plato report was run on Monday. Some students did well. While others did not. Students were reminded to use their calendar and follow the times it says to work on plato.

THRIVE Activities:

Mentor Activities: Goin Downtown with Kim-

This weekend Kim took the students downtown to see the sights of our old town square.   We also had one of our volunteers come join the group.  Here are some of the pictures.

Great Job Mentors!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook page.

Important upcoming dates:

The next cooking activity is Ooey Gooey MonkeyBreak by Katie.  The students that are involved have already accepted the invitation.  I’ll let you see what they did next week.

October 25-27th: Family Weekend:

There is a listing of activities on UCM’s website (https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/student-experience/special-events/family-weekend/ )  THRIVE is also looking at adding our own family activity at this time.  Please continue to watch emails and/or the next blog.

We had sign up sheets in the back of the room for UCM’s intramural activities but we didn’t receive enough students that wanted to join to create a team.  We will continue to let students be aware and try to get them involved.
