THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
Winter is coming...
Some added thoughts for this week. With the end of Summer officially today, families you might make sure your student has appropriate winter gear. Missouir is known for having early winters and the weather can change literally overnight. So if you are coming this weekend you might make sure your student has a heavy coat, boots, gloves, winter clothing, etc.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
Monday Students were reminded- put names and titles on assignments before submitting. we went over a list of distractions.. We discussed how to deal with each distraction. Students were reminded to use the activity app in order to earn discussion board points each week. Students were assigned reading chapter 3 this week. Mrs. Southard demonstrated how to outline the chapter. Students learned how to take notes on chapter 3 using notability. We discussed the importance of time management.
Daily & Independent Living Skills: Lisa Garnier
Students have worked hard this week getting work completed. A topic this week was stress and ways to deal with it. What happens physically a person is feeling stressed or nervous about something. Each student makes a list of things they have on the mind that could cause them to be worried or stressed. Work ethics were also discussed.
We also took a field trip to learn more about UCM’s Food Pantry, students can utilize this service in-between Walmart runs to get some good food items.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
In Tech Lit, we discussed safety on the internet and also talked about their future aspirations. The students watched a PowerPoint/animation about internet safety and what information to not share with others. Then discussed and wrote a one-page paper to themselves about what they thought they’d be doing in 10-years, 20-years, and 30-years. I’m sure I will have some good reading this week.
Relationships 101: Debra Southard
We are starting a two week topic of Dating. Topics this week where to go for a date. How to ask someone for a date. How to start dating. Who pays for the date? Also, some dating rules were discussed.
Second-Year Students:
Studying hard in between classes…
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We are discussing Personal Bank Accounts and how these personal bank accounts affect our lives. Personal Bank Account (PBA) in the 7 habits book is an account on how we see ourselves and how we treat others. Just like a real bank account, you can have withdrawals and deposits in your life. These withdrawals and deposits are how you treat yourself and how you build relationships with others.
One of the assignments that the students are doing currently is the Random Act of Kindness (RAK). The students have to do three RAKs this week. I don’t want the students to spend money on these acts of kindness. This is more about doing something more personal. Ex: calling a friend, opening the door for a stranger, calling your family for no apparent reason. I want the students to tell me how these acts of kindness made them feel and how they think the act of kindness made the other person feel.
Internship I: Gary Manning
Some of the skills we are talking about is how to show initiative and being independent. These are two skills a lot of individuals have trouble with. We always want someone to tell us what to do and not do anything until we are told what to do. We don’t want our students just standing around at their internships or always needing help. We want them to show initiative and ask what they can do. We want them to show independent skills at their internships and in life.
Plato: Debra Southard
Students are working on Plato. Most are doing well. Some need a reminder. Students need to follow the schedules that they received the first day of class. It has plato time on the schedule which would help them complete it daily.
THRIVE Activities:
Mr. B’s Old Drum Bus trip.
On Monday Mr. B took a group of first-year students on the Old Drum bus to help them know how to use it. The students have to have exact change or they can purchase bus cards for $6, $15, and $30 dollars from the bus driver. Here are some pictures of the first trip…

There are lots of other events that families can do that weekend so the mentors don’t have a planned activity. See the events below. The next cooking activity is Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, can’t wait to hear about this one. The students that are involved have already accepted the invitation. I’ll let you see what they did next week.
