First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
This week we finished Chapter4. The test was Friday. We discussed a to-do list. Also covered was a five-day study plan. The importance of studying every day for five days to prepare for a test. Tuesday a couple of past graduates attended a google meet with all of us. Morgan and Richard discussed the importance of getting classwork completed. Also, topics of discussion were how to stay out of study hall plus, the need for a todo list and a planner. Students were asked to email Dr. Manning a list of classes they are interested in for next year. Thursday we walked over to the Union and the Wood building to see where everyone's new classes are that start on Monday. We also discussed what the word elaborate means. Students worked on some examples of how to construct a paragraph and expand ideas and thoughts.
Debra also had two of our past students that are currently going to school at UCM talk to our students about areas that THRIVE helped them and how they work with scheduling homework and their own time. It was great to see them again. Great students at UCM!
Some students spent some extra time after Friday’s University Foundations’ test to get some homework done…
Daily & Independent Living Skills: Lisa Garnier
Some pictures from Mrs. Garnier’s class.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Relationships 101: Debra Southard
We finished up discussing abuse relationships. Students completed a Kahoots. We discussed the old but good video we watched last week that pointed several behaviors out. And we read some scenarios and identified whether it was abuse or not.
Plato:
All students had new assessments in Reading, Writing, and Math. Seems like the same students are asked to attend study hall plus each week. They are having trouble remembering to complete plato. I have suggested to them that they look at their to-do list and their commitment calendar several times a day in order to stay on track. Also mentioned several times is to find a place on campus to work, go to the library, or the rec center. Stay away from the dorm during the day that tends to have a lot of distractions. Mr. Brunkhorst met with the group and explained the importance of completing work.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week we did an activity on budgeting money. Through the activity, the students had to decide on wants and needs. They also had to make decisions on if they had enough money to buy certain items for themselves and for others. Sometimes our students have to be reminded that their families are paying for their debit/credit card and they just cannot go spend money on everything.
Internship I: Gary Manning
We have had some good discussions on what the students want as a career/job after they graduate from the THRIVE program. The internships that the students have during this semester and next semester should benefit them with their job/career choices. These discussions can be difficult for students. The discussions make the students think about what they may want to do after THRIVE.
Plato: Debra Southard
Mrs. Southard was real happy this Monday morning. Almost ALL students had done their Plato last week. This means most students will have some free time in the evening… Great job students!!
