THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

First-year students have been discussing the classes they’d like to take next semester.  The team looked over them yesterday and enrollment will begin soon.  If you have any questions we’d suggest you get with your students on what ideas they had.

University Foundations: Debra Southard

We worked on a to-do list and discussed assignments that were due this week.  Students are getting better at using the activity app and discussion board. Tuesday Mrs. Southard demonstrated how to scrub and clean cloth masks. Students were assigned a one-page paper to write about a career or job that they are interested in. They were reminded of their resources available. Volunteers, mentors, learning commons in the library, also peers as well as family could provide support. Some students were asked to rewrite the assignment after it was turned in. We watched a video on Will Smith discussing what it takes to be successful. Students were assigned to read the rest of chapter one this week. Students completed papers on short and long-term goals. Discuss focused on the career goal they have and their behaviors being congruent.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:  Lisa Garnier

This week DILS class had two guest speakers. Meg Arth, a nurse with the campus health center, came to talk about safe choices in relationships and gave an overview of personal health in the context of physical relationships. The students asked great questions and a much-left class with a new perspective on healthy physical and emotional relationships. On Friday, we reviewed a budgeting activity as part of our basic personal finance curriculum.

Here is a picture of Karlie leading the class last week to discuss stress and anxiety.   Great job, Karlie.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

This week we spent a lot of time on a comparison shopping activity. We learned to decide what factors/features are important to us in specific products, then we learned how to compare different brands to decide which product is the best value. They learned about inserting tables in Word documents and are using that knowledge to create a table comparing two tech items they may want to purchase (Android vs. I-phone, Playstation vs. Xbox, etc.) This is a research project based on the skills they learned in the comparison shopping activity.

Relationships 101: Debra Southard

We made a list of items a family would need to take care of a baby. We discussed all the needs an infant has and how having a baby will change a person's life and relationships.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing the four quadrants of “Put First Things First”. 1) The Procrastinator

 2) The Prioritizer 3) The Yes-Man 4) The Slacker.  Each of us has certain qualities in one of these quadrants but we do spend time in all of the quadrants at one time or another.

We are also discussing what it looks like using a daily/monthly planner.  We want the students to use a to-do list but how do you put the to-do list on a daily/weekly/monthly planner.

Ms. Karlie came to class to discuss dealing with stress/anxiety.  The students had a lot of good questions and the discussion was very good.

Here are some pictures from Karlie’s presentation.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The internships are still going well.  With the weather turning colder some of the internships have had to be inside more.  The students will start the interview process for their spring internships.  I and the students have had great discussions about their spring internships and how the internships should go along with what they may want to pursue later in life.
