First-Year Students:

Director Notes:

First-Year students.  I hope that you are having a great start to your break.  You made it through the first semester.  As I look back I can see so much growth in many of you.  You are more responsible in many ways.  You are starting to look at homework and getting it done without us asking you to do so.  I can see many of you will have a great Spring semester.  Have a great Winter Break!

University Foundations: Debra Southard

Monday students were assigned a five-day study plan to complete. Also, students were given the opportunity to pick up another copy of the study guides for UF and for Relationships. Tuesdays students were asked to show Mrs.Southard their Monday on their five-day study plan. NO students have completed it. Mrs. Southard stressed the importance of hard work. Wednesday Mr. Brunkhorst and Mrs. Southard walked students all over campus showing students where their new classes for the Spring semester would be located. Thursday was a review day for the final. Friday students took the final and turned in their iPads along with their textbooks. Students had a big paper that was due this week. Several pages were assigned to write about their lives. Students could tell or not what they wanted to about their lives so far. This gave students the opportunity to practice their writing skills and reflect on their lives.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:  Lisa Garnier

This week we finished up our review for the final exam. Students were given a two hour window in which to take the exam on Blackboard. They were allowed to use any notes as well as the slides from the presentations in class.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students finished their iMovie trailers and showed them in class on Dec. 3rd. Overall, they did a good job planning and producing their short film trailers.

A few first-year students are studying hard for finals.  Great job students!!  Good luck.

Relationships 101: Debra Southard

Class meets once a week and this week was the final week. Students took a comprehensive test of each topic we have discussed this semester. Students were encouraged to review the slides from earlier classes.

Second-Year Students:

Director Notes:

Winter Break coming up I wanted to give Second-year families some information about leaving.  You should’ve received an email with the Winter Break form that will be hanging on the student’s doors.

For Winter Break:

Second-year students have finals the week of December 7th - December 11th.  Second-year students will need to be out of the dorms on December 11th, by 6 pm.   They will get a check-off sheet that will instruct them on what they need to have done before they leave and it generally needs to be checked off by an RA.  Here is a sample list,

  1. All garbage from the room disposed of in the dumpster.

  2. Room free of any other garbage swept, and cleaned bathroom, also.

  3. Clear the floor of all items not belonging there.

  4. Unplug everything in their room, including power strips and extension cords

  5. Unplug and leave the refrigerator open, placing a towel at the bottom of the refrigerator to catch any moisture.

  6. Take home all perishable food items

  7. Clean and store any dining ware

  8. Close all windows and close all blinds.

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

The students finished discussing Habit 7 and we finished our book study of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  The students will have their final over this book.  We reviewed for the final and discussed how they can continue to use the concepts of this book in their daily lives.

Dr. Manning and Karlie doing some role play this morning for class.  Great job Karlie and Dr. Manning on showing the students some valuable lessons.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students worked on their mock interview skills to prepare for the final in the internship class. Their final will be an interview with Dr. Manning.   Ms. Kriss and Dr. Manning did two mock interviews in front of the class to demonstrate proper interview skills and improper interview skills.

Plato: Debra Southard

Students took new December assessments. The second-year students are taking their time on the assessments. While most of the first-year students are not even after repeated reminders.

THRIVE Activities:

Mentor Activities: Kim had a destressing Game night for the second-year students this last weekend.

Great Job Everyone!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.

Important upcoming dates:

Next Mentor Activity:  No weekend activities until next semester.

Spring Semester: will start back up on Monday, January 11th.  The teachers plan on bringing the students by their class areas before they leave for break and will also remind them when they get back.  Classes are in the process of being enrolled and most students should be able to look on their MyCentral to see what they have for the semester.

Spring Move-in: will be on January 10th and the dorms will open at noon.
