First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Wednesday Dr. Manning discussed workplace issues. Problems that could come up at a job and how to deal with different situations. Friday students presented their jamboards. Students worked on them the week before. There were to include pictures of “Things they would like in their future life”
Learning Strategies-
Monday was Martin Luther King Day. Wednesday Karlie Kriss presented a lesson about communication. Which included different ways people communicate and different forms of communication. Friday students were reminded to use the activity app. Several students did not do that the previous week. Mrs. Southard went over the homework for the week. Friday we meet on google hangout. We started notetaking using notability.
Personal Math-
We began our week on Tuesday with a very basic primer on taxes and W-4 forms and moved on to understanding paystubs on Thursday. Students used math skills such as addition, subtraction, division, and calculating percentages to learn about gross pay, net pay, and deductions. It’s always interesting to see the reactions when they learn that they don’t actually get to take home every dollar they earn. We talked about why taxes are taken from their paychecks, what those tax dollars are spent on, and identified ways that they personally benefit from paying taxes.
Study Hall Time: Workin’ Hard!!
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II:
This week has been a little different. We didn’t have class on Monday. Ms. Karlie Kriss came to class on Wednesday to present on effective communication skills. Then on Friday, we discussed having role models/mentors in their lives that help guide us through our lives. The students had to come up with three role models in their lives.
Internship II:
We have been updating our resumes this week.. The students need to make sure they have their fall internships on their resumes and any new references. The students will be working with the UCM Career Service Office here in the next couple of weeks.
A few pictures of our students working hard at their internships!
Plato-
Second years have a new subject this semester. Students are asked to complete 2 hours of math, 2 hours of writing, 1 hour of reading, and 1 hour of health. Students have reported they are enjoying health. All but two first-year students completed plato last week.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
Last weekend, Alex was able to do his first cooking activity, spaghetti. I’m sure the students enjoyed their meal.
This coming weekend, Claire has them all getting some exercise and having a great time playing Pickleball.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. They are limiting the crowd.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
