THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
We discussed how to email professors, getting organized for the new semester, and being proactive in completing assignments. Dr. Manning explained job shadowing. This class does not have a textbook. Information will be presented in power points and other information is on Blackboard.
Learning Strategies-
Students have done well being back on campus. All are working hard. Monday students were given two homework assignments that were due Friday. Wednesday we discussed the class syllabus and class expectations. Friday we began working on notability Students should have read the first 15 pages in Chapter 1. This week Mrs. Southard met with students individually and checked that each student could get their computer to read to them. Every Thursday point sheets are due.
Personal Math-
Our first week in math was spent introducing the course priorities and subject matter, as well as going over the syllabus, and reviewing Blackboard and Edmodo. Since this course focuses on real-world basic math applications, we did a brief background lesson on the currency. We covered what it is, the proper way to write monetary amounts in numeric form, and did some basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems using simple word problems. Here is an example: “If you bought a $5.00 cup of coffee every week day, how much money would you have spent in a month?” $5 x 5 = $25/wk x 4 weeks in a month = $100/ month on coffee. It was quite an eye opener. I think we have some students who are going to be drinking less coffee this semester !
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II:
It is great to have the student back on campus and in class. This semester is going to be fast and furious at times. I really want the students to concentrate on what their goals are after May 8th, 2021. The students will need to have discussions/research on transportation, careers, and living arrangements. Their families will need to be involved in these discussions with the students and us as a staff. We all need to be collaborating on these topics and getting outside resources/agencies involved before May 8th. The THRIVE staff will be in contact with the families this semester on the next step and give the families resources they can use with the students’ transition from being THRIVE students to the students' next stage in their lives.
Internship II:
The students’ are getting acquainted with their internships. Most of the students have started their internships and maybe going through training at the internship locations. We had the students put their supervisors' contact information on their phones in case the students need that information. It is up to the students to contact their supervisor if they are sick and cannot make it to work. Further, when UCM is not in session for classes that does not mean that students do not have their internships. The students are responsible for communicating with their supervisor if that certain location is open on the days UCM doesn't have classes.
Plato- Plato has added some topics for the second year students to study. This week students worked on Health. Friday Mrs. Southard meets with each second-year student to discuss if they liked health or not and they have to change to pick another topic to work on.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
Last weekend, Kim provided an activity, New Year, New Me activity with the students on Saturday from 3- 4 pm.
This coming weekend, 22-24th, Alex will have his student group making spaghetti.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. They are limiting the crowd.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
