THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
It’s been a busy week. We had our Spring Open House on Monday, where we had about 10 families attend our two sessions. The students were great and we were happy that Dean Lee could welcome them to our session.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Job skills were discussed. Dr. Manning explained Thank you letters. Students will be asked to write for each job shadowing experience they complete. The plan is for each student to complete 3 job shadowing experiences each in different locations this semester.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
This week we are preparing for a test. Students completed taking notes on chapter 1 using notability. We also created a word cloud using the web site www.Mentimeter.com. Students were to get in the study groups this week and review. Bellwork was given on Wednesday asking questions related to the upcoming test. Discussed this week were the many ways to study, flashcards, Quizlet, practice questions, outlining the chapter, rewriting notes, reading over the google slides, and a few others.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
We began a group project on budgeting with roommates. The students were divided into three groups of 3 and given a scenario in which they are provided apartment and expense information. Each group is tasked with deciding how to split expenses (rent, utilities, internet, etc.) equitably. Based on their decisions, they are setting up individual budgets and a whole-apartment budget. Some students want roommates when they get their own place, some don’t. Discussing the average rent for a decent one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood raised a few eyebrows, as did the idea that some apartments require extra payment for parking. I think they are on the cusp of understanding how real-world expenses and finances actually work.Bonus: They seem to be having fun!
Thank you, Debra, for working our THRIVE booth at the Volunteer fair last week.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
Good morning! We are currently working on some math skills (Ex: How much does an individual make when that individual works so many hours in a week and they make so much in an hour). From this concept, we are going to start working on monthly realistic budgets. We will utilize that the students are working 40 hours per week making $12 per hour. Utilizing this income then we will start breaking down expenses (taxes, rent, bills, and etc..)
GreGreat
Great job Studying, Taylor!!! Keep up the great work.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
I had the opportunity to meet with some Grad Students that work in the UCM Career Service Office. These grad students are going to start doing activities with the Thrive students. The activities include resume building, job search, interviewing skills, clothing attire for interviews, and mock interviews. These activities should start in the next week or so.
Plato- Most students had their plato completed. Students need to be reminded to take their time. Clicking through answers students do not learn.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
Last weekend, Claire had them all getting some exercise and having a great time playing Pickleball. Looks like a lot of fun!
This coming weekend, Alex has another cooking activity.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. They are limiting the crowd.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
THRIVE Family Interviews will be during the week of 2/1-⅖ and 2/22-2/26. The students will still have homework during these weeks. The homework may be done on their own or in smaller groups.
