It’s warming up in the Burg. Many students are getting out more. This last week we discussed that Midterms are coming up and we’d be sending home midterm reports in about a week. We’ve had some students that have really kicked it in gear and have been improving their grades.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
This week we discussed having self-determination and being an advocate for yourself. The discussion involved having these skills whether in the workplace, with friends and families, and in your daily life. Further, we discussed that we are responsible for our choices that we make. Sometimes we have to overcome our bad choices and have the self-determination to make ourselves better.
The students also did their second job shadows for the semester. The students will do their final job shadow the last week in March.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
It has been a busy week. Everyday an assignment was due. Chapter 3 was covered. Notes were taken using notability. We talked about how reflecting on past decisions can help you make better choices. Students were encouraged to work with a friend on questions at the end of the chapter. Kahoots was used Friday to help review some of the earlier ideas.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
On Tuesday, we continued talking about checking accounts but focused on the fees that can be incurred (ATM fees, overdraft fees, Maintenance fees). Thursday we learned how to write checks and reviewed some basic money math skills, such as adding different types of coins (Example: 2 nickels + 3 dimes + 1 quarter = 65 cents). Their homework for the weekend included practicing check writing skills and finishing the money math activity.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
The students continue to work on a transition plan from being in the UCM THRIVE program to graduating and what might be their next step in their lives. We have discussed apartments, transportation, and budgeting. At times for the students, this can be an overwhelming/stressful discussion/project to work on. However, we believe this is avital part of our program.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
We continue to discuss professional and social skills that an individual will need to help them to be successful. Some of those skills are; self-determination, problem-solving, decision making, personal responsibility, personal space, and being respectful to others.
We continue to collaborate with the UCM Career Service Office. This week the students worked with Career Coaches on their resumes. This has been a very good partnership with the UCM THRIVE program and the UCM Career Service Office.
Plato- Students were reminded this week to watch each tutorial and complete the practice questions before each test. If students do not earn mastery to go back and complete that section again. Repeating a section will count for their total time for the week. Students should take their time and do their best on each section. Plato is about learning the objective not just putting in the time each week. Skipping sections is also not advised.
A few students went to play Drag Bingo last week…
