THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
The students just finished up the midterm this last week. We’ll have midterm progress reports out by the 11th or 12th. Next year’s classes/internships are in full swing. Most students should have submitted their top five classes and all have filed out the Roommate Questionnaire to help the staff set up rooms. We have already had many interviews and are more than halfway through our students for next year’s first-year group. It’s hard to believe we are almost done with the year. We have already started the planning process for our 2nd-year graduation and hope to have more details soon.
A reminder that this week, Friday the 12th the students will have to be out of the dorms by 6 pm. The students should've received information from Housing today and I sent home an email over the weekend to families. Then the dorms will open back up on Sunday, March 21st at noon. Some students will have some work to do over Spring Break...
First-Year Students:
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
This week we prepared for a midterm. Monday we finished up talking about procrastination and why students procrastinate. Students were given a five-day study plan and it was explained. A website was shared that also explained the concept of the five-day study plan.

Wednesday we had some fun and worked on a couple of Kahoots. We stopped and discussed some of the answers as we completed the test. Friday we took the mid-term.
A little studying in some small groups…

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Last week the students did their second job shadow for the semester. Students turned in their second job shadowing reflection paper and thank you note. As the students are doing their reflection paper/thank you letter they continue to improve on their writing skills. The conversation this week was about self-determination and how important it is.
Some afternoon learning going on in Workplace…
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
This week we talked about saving money and how savings accounts work. Our regular math homework still centers on money math skills with practice counting money and making change. Next week we will tackle the wonderful world of simple and compound interest and what types of savings account vehicles offer the best growth opportunities.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
We continue to discuss what it may look like for the student once they graduate in a couple of months. The transition from graduating from the THRIVE program is a huge transition for the students. However, this transition can be overwhelming/stressful for the student. They have been part of the THRIVE program for two years and have made many connections at UCM. As the students are home for spring break there will be some assignments I want them to do to help with the transition piece of the THRIVE program.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
Internships are going well. However, we continue on a daily basis as a THRIVE staff and internship supervisors to work on skills we believe the students need. All students do things well and all students have areas of growth that we want the students to work on. We give the students resources and suggestions to use to help with these areas of growth.
Plato-
All students had new assessments for the month of March. Students are beginning to demonstrate their understanding about taking their time on the assessments.
THRIVE Activities:
The Bowling teams had their last bowling of the season on Sunday evening. Had some great fun!!
Mentor Activities:
This weekend, Savanna will have another cooking activity… Tacos...
Next weekend is the beginning of Spring Break so we’ll have two weekends without any activities from the mentors.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
THRIVE Bowling teams played again this past weekend. We had enough ladies and men to have a team on each.
Here are some pictures from our first Bowling League night. We have a ladie's team and a men’s team.
There are many more pictures on Facebook.
THRIVE Family Interviews: We’ve finished our main interviews for next year's group. We had some great families and students. We are hopeful that all of them will accept our invitations. We have a few spots left but I’m continuing to have communication with other families for next year. Looks like we’ll have some great groups of kids for next fall. I know that the staff is excited about the new year.
