Week 4/12 Posting
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
On Monday we took the test for Chapter 4 and several assignments were opened on Tuesday so students could see what was coming up and what they needed to work into their schedule. The rest of the week we took notes on Chapter 5. A lot of the topic was about active listening and how listening in high school was different from what they have experienced in college classes. Distractions were also a topic.
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
We used this week as a time to work on assignments. Students had several assignments to work on. Powerpoint presentation, reflection paper on job shadowing, cover letters, thank you letters, and a paper explaining where they would like to do their internship next fall. We also spent some time this week looking at their non THRIVE syllabus and the final schedule each student was to figure out when their final was scheduled. The last topic of the week was addressing the student's backpacks. Seems like students put everything they have in there which makes them extremely heavy to carry. They do not need every book packed every day.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
This week we spent time discussing the importance of credit history. Students learned what credit reports are, where to get them, how to read them, and why it’s important to review them at least once a year to check for inaccuracies in the personal information, accounts, and inquiries sections of the report. My hope is that students learn that credit is necessary, but also needs to be fully understood and correctly monitored for financial safety.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
We have been discussing that the students only have about a month left being UCM THRIVE students. This is scary, overwhelming but exciting for the students. For the past two years, they have been very active here at UCM and have gained knowledge/experiences that we believe will benefit them.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
The students have been preparing for mock interviews at the UCM Career Service Office. We have also been filling out job applications during class. The students have had questions on certain items on the job application and how the time should be filled out. The students are also researching jobs in their particular community and the procedure to apply for that particular job.
Plato- Most students completed plato the week before. New assessments were not available due to updating the PLATO programs but will start on April 12th.
