THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):

We took notes on how to take notes. How to know what is important. Why note-taking is important to the overall learning of the material and different ways to take notes. For the upcoming test next week several questions were posted on edmodo.com along with the correct answers. Students were encouraged to check that out frequently. Students were reminded of a five-day study plan.

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

This week in class we discussed applications. How to fill out an application using black and blue ink. Writing neatly, Using the information from their resumes to complete the application. Students practice filling out one that was printed out and one online. Also touched on was the interview process.

Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):

We finished our unit on credit Tuesday by discussing credit scores, what they mean, and why they are important. Thursday was a review for the unit test which is on Blackboard from 8:00 a.m. Friday, April 16th through 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 19th. Students are encouraged to use their study guides and their homework to assist them on the test.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):

This week we discussed and completed the Personal Support Inventory (PSI) and The Arc’s Self-Determination Scale.  We want the students to self-reflect on their abilities and their progress over the past two years.  The PSI is also done by the THRIVE mentors and instructors on all the THRIVE students.

Internship II- (Dr. Manning):

The students’ are in the process of finishing up their internships in a couple of weeks.  However, they still have a lot to do during their internships.  One of the main items the students need to get accomplished is asking their supervisors for a reference letter.  We have been talking about this over the course of the year and how it is important to do a good job at their internships.

Plato- Students had new assessments this week. Some students are still going to fast completing the assessment which does not give accurate data as far as grade levels.
