Week 4/26 Blog

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

Next week is Finals week.  We’ve asked all students to maintain a quiet atmosphere as all of our students will be taking their finals throughout the week.  I’ve also sent families a copy of the checkout procedure for that week.  Dorms will close on Friday 7th, at 6 pm.  I’ll be checking with the CA to ensure that the students have signed up for checkout.  If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call.

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):

Monday we finished Chapter 5 with a test and discussed several of the answers as we took the test. Wednesday we finished up several topics. Discussing learning something in one class should be practiced in another class. Like notetaking or marking your textbook which is the next chapter. We also talked about some of the topics we talked about in the first-semester Relationship class and how those ideas and ways to get along with others still apply even though the class is over. Mrs. Southard mentioned there will be no more Sunday study halls due to finals. We talked about the upcoming end-of-year awards. This is the last week on P.E. and Communications so students will have a little more time to get their work completed. Friday we talked about how to get ready for a class. Like reading the summary in the textbook and reading the heading in the chapter. We also used guided notes.

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

Monday students presented information about their three job shadowing experiences. Students had a scoring guide to follow. Each student stood in front of the class and explained what they did and which ones they liked. Some students were a bit nervous but everyone did a great job. Wednesday students completed a self-assessment. The Arc’s self-determination scale helps determine what areas students may need support in after their first year of THRIVE.

Pictures from Monday-More on Facebook.

Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):

Last week we began our final unit. We began talking about Consumer Skills. We are learning how to make wise consumer choices by comparing prices and quality. We’re learning about tipping, sales taxes, and the importance of reading and reviewing receipts for accuracy. We’ve continued to talk about the different ways to pay for things such as cash, credit, and debit and how to use these wisely.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):

The students finished up the ARC survey and the PSI inventory.  We also discussed stress and how the students can help their stress levels over the next couple of weeks.  Especially, with the semester ending and graduation coming up.  Having balance in their life and getting enough rest but using their time management skills.

Internship II- (Dr. Manning):

The students did their mock interviews at the UCM Career Service office this week.  They were a little nervous but did a very nice job.  This week in class the students will self-reflect on their Internship Progress Reports.  We will compare what the students wrote about themselves to what their supervisors wrote about the students.

Plato- Everyone completed plato last week. That doesn't happen too often. Great job!!!

THRIVE Activities:

A couple of our students are using the Rec Center for their PE time.

Mentor Activities:

This weekend the students were able to take part in an activity with Abbie.  “No-Bake Cookies.

We are still trying to track down pictures, when we find them we’ll post them on Facebook.

Next week Kim will have our last activity for the students.  Wait and see...
