Week of August 23 Blog

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

Director Notes:

This coming weekend is a 3-day weekend.  We won’t have Sunday Study Hall but will have study hall on Monday night, probably in the dorms.  If you are picking up your student please have them use the Activity Log App on their iPad.  We’re trying to get them to use them anytime they do an activity.  And going home is an activity.  It also helps us know when students leave the dorms.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This week we have continued to work on learning the different websites we use. Students were reminded to check their emails three to four times a day. All students went over to the office of accessibility for individual meetings about their accommodations. Time management was covered a few times. Homework was assigned. It is on Blackboard. Everyone is encouraged to ask for help. The importance of determination and being respectful are topics of the week. Past students' stories were discussed as well.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier

Homework was due Wednesday. Monday Mrs. Garnier covered the topic of listening. Wednesday OAS (office of accessibility) can go to the class and help our students get their computers to read to them. So now students can have their textbooks read to them. Friday’s topic was gossip and social media.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We’ve been busy learning about doing homework on Blackboard. Students learned how to do discussion boards and practiced submitting assignments, as well as how to monitor their course grades and read instructor comments on graded assignments. We installed the free Grammarly to help them with grammar and spelling, and they learned how to create a task/to-do list in their google calendar to help them manage their time more efficiently.

Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst

This week the students worked on learning more about self-determination skills.  Learning about how to tell others what you want to do and being more of a self-advocate.  Half of the students also started meeting with a student from a class that teaches them about the transition from high school to life after.  They are students that are wanting to become teachers.  They will be assisting our first-year students to learn and assist them with their homework in the class.  The other half will start this week.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We are getting into our book to study the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  The students are reading pages of the books and then the students have to write at least two paragraphs on their reflection on what they read.  The next day in class we discuss the readings and how we can utilize these habits in our daily lives and profession.

The students also had to make three SMART goals for the semester.  These goals can be personal goals, school-related goals, or internship-related goals.  When the students come to their weekly meeting we discuss the goals and how they are progressing to meet the goals.

Internship I: Gary Manning

All students have either started their internships, started training, or met with their supervisor to start the training.  The internships help the students learn how to organize their daily schedules and be responsible to get to their internships on time.  Further, their internships help the students learn soft skills and hard skills.  There may be certain tasks the students do not like to do at their internship but that is part of having a job and being realistic in having the students do an internship within the THRIVE program.    A couple more at their internship.

Plato: Debra Southard

We are working on Plato. I have watched them closely this week getting it completed. But next week they will need to monitor their time. Students need to complete all of the diagnostics first before moving on to something else.

Four Year program details: Over the next few months we will have opportunities for families to learn more about our 3rd- and 4th-year options.  The third-year will start next fall, so families of 2nd-year students would be able to look at this option for their students.
