Blog for week 9/20
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
Students this week took a test over chapter 3. For the most part, they did pretty well. Also this week we talked about determination, persistence, and patients. We watched a true story movie called “Door to Door” about a salesman with cerebral palsy. We discussed his drive and work ethic. Students were assigned to make a jam board about Bill Porter and the characteristics he possessed.
Individual & Family Health and Relationships: Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier
The week had sensitive and serious topics. We explained we were preparing students to be adults. The topics included self-love, taking care of your body, how does a person knows when they are in love, male and female anatomy, signs of cancer. C.A.U.T.I.O.N. including weight loss and fatigue.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Tech class focused on learning to create slide presentations in PowerPoint and Google Slides. Students chose which platform they wanted to use, and we began work on a project titled “All About Me.” I introduced both PowerPoint and Google Slide basics on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, students worked on their slides in class. Next week they will present their slides to the class.
Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst
This week they will look over their results of the Career Cluster and go more in-depth into the top 6 clusters, what else will they find that might interest them? They will find 2-3 other jobs/careers that might interest them in each of their top clusters. This will help them find other backup plans that might be viable options for them.
A bit of studying going on in the Union. Great ideas gals!
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week we discussed RBAs and PBAs from the 7 habits book. Within that discussion, we talked about withdrawals and deposits into a relationship. The withdrawals and deposits can take place in a relationship bank account and in a personal bank account. At first, the students think we are talking about an actual bank account you have at the bank. However, as I explain the concepts to them and we discuss these accounts in further detail the students start to realize this has nothing to do with money but with how you treat yourself and other individuals around you.
Internship I: Gary Manning
In class, we have been discussing when you have a job on how organized you will need to be. Further, we talk about time management and have a plan for the day, week, and month. We discuss having a planner on how to use the planner to be organized and to make sure you do not overlap meetings, classes, work, and doing school work.
Just a few pics of our students at their internships...
Plato: Debra Southard
Plato is beginning to straighten out for all of us. The students have learned how to check their time on each subject. Most students are doing well completing it. I would like for them to start working on mastery of the topics. Students can research questions as they work on each subject.
THRIVE Activities:
Color Run assistance, Color Run participants, Normie viewing, UCM Mules Football, and then a THRIVE reunion Dance. What more can you ask for on Family Weekend and THRIVE 11th year Reunion? Please look at our Facebook page for lots of photos.

Great Job Everyone!! For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.
Important upcoming dates:
Next Mentor Activity: This coming weekend some of the students will be making fajitas and guacamole. Can’t wait to see what the students think?
Down Syndrome Walk:
October 16th we have a group of students going to the Down Syndrome walk at Arrowhead stadium. We will leave early Saturday and then return on campus in mid-afternoon. I’ll make sure and post some photos.
Four-Year program details: Over the next few months we will have opportunities for families to learn more about our 3rd- and 4th-year options. The third-year will start next fall, so families of 2nd-year students would be able to look at this option for their student. We hope to have some new documents printed and ready in early October to start sharing with families, then we’ll have a Zoom meeting in late October to help families with this process.
