Week 9/27 Blog posting
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
We went over Chapter 4 learning styles. Students took a self-assessment test called Vark. This helped them find out the learning styles. Then we discussed how to adapt when studying the best way for each student to learn. We practiced using google meet for when we might meet virally.
Individual & Family Health and Relationships: Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier
This class covers a lot of information. Monday we talked about being married. Recommended was to spend more time planning the marriage than the wedding. Other topics included communication, putting others ahead of ourselves, and sharing family chores. Wednesday we had some fun. Students were asked to take off their shoes and put on their backpacks backward to get the effect of a pregnant woman. One student decided to walk up all the steps in Lovinger to see that that would be like pregnant! Students were asked to put their shoes back on. They were surprised at the difficulty. Friday we talked about the development of an unborn baby.
Here are some pictures from our activity…
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week students completed their slide presentations and then presented them in class on Thursday and Friday. They learned about bullet points, limited text on slides, adding pictures and graphics to slides, and how to present to a group.
Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst
This week I was gone on Friday, instead, I had the students watch a video lesson about the C.I.T.E Learning Preferences assessment. This assessment will help each student learn more about how they learn best. Their 4150 student will assist them with this over the next week.

Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week we are discussing classes for the spring 2022 semester. The students need to pick out five classes that they would like to take. I have suggested the students talk to the parents about the classes.
We are also talking about budgets. The students have to make choices on wants and needs. The students have a set amount of money for the week. Then the students have to spend their money on certain items and then they have to decide what to spend the rest of their money on.
Internship I: Gary Manning
This week we are discussing internships for the spring 2022 semester. The students need to pick out three-five internships. I have suggested the students talk to the parents about the internships. They can do two internships in a semester. We would like for the students to work 15-20 hours per week at their internships.
Plato: Debra Southard
Many students did not complete plato the week before. That caused them to go to study hall plus. They have had a difficult time catching up. Students are to work on Plato 1 hour everyday.
