Week 1/18 Post
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
Notes from the Director:
Just a reminder about confidentiality and our students. If families have any questions please always contact either Mrs. Southard (First-Year) or Dr. Manning (Second-Year). I’m always a backup to either one of these. Please don’t contact other THRIVE students or mentors to discuss matters. If you have any questions, please contact me.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
We talked about problems at the workplace and ways to resolve them. Students presented jamboards they completed about places they have worked or volunteered. If a student had not worked, students were to include information about their career interests. Friday Dr. Manning discussed Ethics at the workplace.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)
This week students had vocabulary and definitions to turn in along with a word search. We played a game “Toss the rubber chicken” Each student took that time to reflect on last week and decide if they were motivated or not. Students talked about what they could do differently this week. Friday public safety was here to refresh students on Title IX.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)- (Mrs. Garnier)
Tuesday we learned about the 12 qualities of professionalism. We discussed how to exhibit these qualities and why they are important in the workplace, as students, and in personal and community situations. This transitioned into Thursday’s class on workplace and volunteer behaviors which focused on how different types of behavior may be appropriate in different situations, for instance how we behave with friends may not be an appropriate way to behave on the job or in the classroom.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)
The students are in the process of researching different transportation options in their hometowns. This may include walking, biking, buses, taxi/uber, etc… We have asked the students to think about transportation instead of having their families/friends transport them. This can be scary and overwhelming for the students and parents. However, we believe this is an independent skill the students may need.
Internship II: (Dr. Manning)
Internships have started well for the students. Some places on UCM are struggling with hiring student-workers and that can affect the THRIVE students internships and we have had some. Especially with the UCM Child Care Center and Sodexo/Dining Halls. The students are starting to realize again how important it is to be organized and use time management skills.
Allie, Austin, Marlon, and Shahd at their internships last week.
Plato- (Mrs. Southard)
Last week students completed diagnostics in reading, math, and writing. This week all students need to complete 1 hour a day on plato in reading, math, and writing as well as personal finance and social studies.
