More Snow this past week…
Notes from the Director:
Leaving for Spring Break:
I’ve emailed all the families about Spring Break move-out times. The students need to be out of the dorms by 6 pm on Friday evening. I’ve also emailed the students about what they need to do to their rooms before leaving. They can be charged a $100 fine if things aren’t done correctly. I’ve also discussed this in class on Monday.
Our team is starting to gear up for next year. Your students are choosing classes for next year. They have been asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference. Then email Dr. Manning/Mrs. Southard. We’d suggest talking to your students about what they are thinking about taking. Then over Spring Break Dr. Manning will start to enroll the students for the 2022 Fall semester.
Mr. B has sent out emails to families to send letters of intent for the fall semester to First-Year students. This will help us with enrollment and dorm room ideas. Please watch for this email.
New happenings may be coming to Ellis Dining Hall. The students may have received the information but I wanted to make sure that the families were aware. They might be remodeling Ellis Dining Hall in January of 2023. They are waiting on final approval. The students will still be staying in the same hall with our mentors during this remodel. I’ll let families and students know of any new information on an alternate dining hall location.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning): Topics this week centered around stress management. Students were shown how to look up classes for the spring semester and select five they are interested in. That does not mean they will take five. But it is a start looking for classes that fit into their fall schedule and one that would benefit them.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)
Discussing this week centered around study skills and time management. Some students are using their time well while others are not. We talked about the last 8 weeks of classes. How students need to become more responsible for their use of time. We discussed the upcoming spring break. The notability app was discussed and updated.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)- (Mrs. Garnier)
This week we covered cleaning and kitchen safety. From toilet brushes to grease fires, our students learned what to do and what not to to keep their spaces clean and safe. We covered the importance of reading the labels on cleaning supplies and using them as instructed, and how to safely handle sharp objects and appliance cords in the kitchen. I was impressed with how much the students already knew! Great job, Parents.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)
The students have submitted a rough monthly budget. The students are having a hard time with their expenditures being more than their revenue. Now the students have to make budget cuts. They have to decide what a want is and a need is.
Internship II: (Dr. Manning)
The students made their second visit to the UCM Career Service Office on Monday. This week the students had to take a copy of their resumes and the Career Service Staff went through their resumes with the students and made suggestions to them on how to fine-tune the resume. Once the students make changes to their resumes, then we will go through the resumes again and keep fine-tuning the resumes.
Plato- (Mrs. Southard)
Students are working hard to complete plato each week. It is important they complete plato the week before spring break. If not students will have to work on it during the break.
THRIVE Activities:
The THRIVE Staff closed the study hall so that the students could attend an event with Don Quinones. Here are some of the pictures.
Mentor Activities:
This week Lucas and Anthony had the students make spaghetti and garlic bread.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. A signup sheet for softball is out… We have enough students to make a team. Once the schedule is up I’ll include it with this blog.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities. Our next activity will be co-ed softball in about a month.
