Blog post Week 3/7
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.
Notes from the Director:
Coming back from Spring Break:
The dorms will open back up at noon on Sunday the 13th. Please make sure your student has any electronics and chargers that they need. We’ve had multiple students in the past forget them.
Our team is starting to gear up for next year. Your students are choosing classes for next year. They have been asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference. Then email Dr. Manning/Mrs. Southard. We’d suggest talking to your students about what they are thinking about taking. Then over Spring Break Dr. Manning will start to enroll the students for the 2022 Fall semester.
If you haven’t sent your letter of Intent for next Fall/Spring please do so soon as we will be looking at room assignments in the coming week. Mr. B has sent out emails to families to send letters of intent for the fall semester to First-Year students. This will help us with enrollment and dorm room ideas. Please watch for this email.
New happenings may be coming to Ellis Dining Hall. The students may have received the information but I wanted to make sure that the families were aware. They might be remodeling Ellis Dining Hall in January of 2023. They are waiting on final approval. The students will still be staying in the same hall with our mentors during this remodel. I’ll let families and students know of any new information on an alternate dining hall location.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Students practice completing a job application. Students are encouraged to look for summer jobs while on spring break.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)
Students were reminded to read the assignment twice before submitting it. Because we have eight weeks of classes left this year students were encouraged to write their own to-do lists and get with others to do so. It is the responsibility of each student to check the blackboard for assignments. Friday students had a written assignment.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)- (Mrs. Garnier)
This week we reviewed for the mid-term exam and took the actual exam on Thursday prior to Spring break.

Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)
We have been doing a lot of discussion on getting a summer job and utilizing resources in the students’ home area to help with finding a job. At times the students do not want to work or volunteer over the summer. The students see this as their time to relax. However, we want the students to continue to grow and use the concepts that they have learned here at UCM over the summer.
Internship II: (Dr. Manning)
The students are finishing their resumes and submitting the resumes to me. We still need to fine-tune the resumes. The students will start filling out applications for jobs/summer jobs. We believe the students working/volunteering over the summer is crucial to their growth.

Look at Ben. Videotaping at the MIAA tournament.
Plato- (Mrs. Southard)
Most students did well in completing plato. When students return from break they will have new diagnostics in reading, writing, and math. Students will also have two new subjects. They will be done with personal finance and social studies.
THRIVE Activities:
Looks a little bare without students. Just one left… All students were gone this past weekend, going home for Spring Break.
Mentor Activities:
The next mentor activity will be this Sunday the 19th. Hope and Shahd will be showing the small group of students how to make Yogurt Parfaits…
But we did catch a picture of one of our 2nd-year students enjoying the Hawaiin theme at the bowling alley. Looks like fun…
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Softball will be starting up soon. Once I receive the dates and times I’ll post them here.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
