Just a bit of therapy for the first-year students.:
First-Year Students:
Director Notes:
Overall, all students have done a great job. The first day was probably the best day we’ve had for the first day of the year. All students made it to their classes. I’ve been impressed with the work that students are doing and the amount of students that are already trying to find places to study and asking for help. It’s been a great start to the year.
University Foundations: Debra Southard
We have had a good week. Public safety came to the classroom one day and gave a presentation on Title XI. They lead a good discussion about appropriate behaviors on campus.
We worked on discussion boards, learned how to submit an assignment on Blackboard and practiced emailing instructors. Friday students learned where the collaboration zone is located in Lovinger. It is a place all students can go and work together. All students walked over to the OAS, the Office of Accessibility. Each student scheduled a meeting with a staff member to discuss their accommodations.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
We have had a good couple of weeks in class. We have participated in getting-to-know-you activities and had a lesson in regard to Relationships from Acquaintances to Close Friends. This week we have spent time discussing Listening Skills. On Friday, we have a speaker from the University Health Center. The only concerns have been learning to use Blackboard to complete and submit homework assignments. As a first-year Adjunct Instructor, I am also learning this process. I have enjoyed getting to know each student and am looking forward to our year together.
Here are some pictures of student artwork as they listened to my instructions to draw a picture to practice listening skills.
Technology Literacy: Victoria O’Reilly
Our THRIVE students here at UCM have been busy the past few weeks in Tech Literacy. We have worked hard on how to compose and send professional emails, as well as when and how to respond to incoming emails. If you want to check in on your child's skills, feel free to send them an email! Each student has set up an organized Google Drive with folders for each course. We’ve talked about the importance of titling each document created so assignments are easy to locate. We also briefly discussed internet safety and students came up with specific questions they wanted answered on the topic. More to come on that later! It has been such a joy to get to know your child and I look forward to the weeks to come!
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This particular class meets on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 1:50. This week was being able to utilize blackboard and what the class expectations are. The students do have an assignment for this week. They are supposed to write at least one paragraph on what type of career they may be interested in.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This particular class meets on Tuesdays/Thursdays. This week we discussed the expectations of the class and the different concepts we will be discussing. The students will be doing a book study. The students will be reading “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” by Sean Covey.
Internship I: Gary Manning
Most of the students will be starting their internships next week. In class, we discussed the expectations at their internships. We also discussed different assignments the students will need to accomplish throughout the semester. The students are very eager to start their internships.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Last week we reviewed what is expected of 3rd-year students and discussed what the class will cover. We are using the book Designing Your Life and the accompanying workbook. We’ve talked about the importance of not only finding the right job/career but how that fits into the life they want to live in a broader sense.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
I have met with each student individually twice to discuss how they are adjusting to the new semester and to finalize internship hours. Most have begun their internships with the rest scheduled to start theirs next week.
Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard
In The Food class, we discussed the order of doing dishes. Food safety and kitchen safety was also a topic. Washing hands was discussed as well. Friday WILS was here to discuss with students transportation to their internships.
