THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Director Notes:

Some upcoming events to put on your schedule.  We have Family Weekend coming up from September 30 - October 2nd.  We will have more information to follow but there are lots of activities on campus that weekend which include Volleyball (Friday night), Family Movie Night (Friday Night), Football game Mules vs Northeastern State (Saturday), Volleyball (Saturday night), and we’ll have a couple of THRIVE events to be announced.  Then we’ll have Homecoming the weekend of October 14-15th.  There is Volleyball on Friday night, a Football game on Saturday and then another Volleyball game on Saturday night.  We will also be in the Homecoming Parade, Saturday morning, so we hope to see everyone there.

University Foundations: Debra Southard

We finished Chapter 1. Topics of discussion were: how to send professional emails, differences between high school and college, earning potential of people with education, and instructor expectations. Students are beginning to adjust to college life. We played a Kahoots. I had students change seats. I want them to make friends with everyone.  Almost everyone used the activity app this week!

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

The topic for the week was Conflict Resolution. We discussed the causes of conflict, outcomes of negative responses to conflict, positive reactions to conflict, and positive outcomes of change due to conflict. We are moving forward with relationships as we move from friendships to dating relationships this coming week.

Technology Literacy:  Victoria O’Reilly

Students were busy this week with a guest speaker from Public Safety who came in to chat about internet safety. He gave an interactive presentation and students asked lots of great questions. We also celebrated Get the Red Out during our typical class time and the twins and I had the pleasure of seeing so many First Year THRIVE students out and about spreading the red. Looking forward to another great week!

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

This week in class we continue to discuss goals and have realistic goals.  The students continue to research different careers and how those careers may relate to what they are interested in.  We discuss the different aspects of a career.  For example, if you want to go into education, what are the different jobs you can do in education: teaching, paraprofessional, pre-school, daycare, coach, and etc.

Some first-year students enjoying some time after class.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

This week we started to discuss Habit 2 “Begin with the end in mind”.  I had a picture of the UCM graduation ceremony up and talked about how graduation is the end in mind.  How will the students accomplish this goal? All Of them said to study, get school work done, and take care of our business every day.

Internship I: Gary Manning

Internships are going very well.  Supervisors are very pleased with the students' work ethic and their soft skills.  However, we still need to work on not having their cell phones out during internship times.  As for hard skills we are still working on these skills.  Hard skills are harder to learn and take time.  Some of the hard skills that students are learning are operating equipment, using technology, and customer service skills.

Personal Finance I: Lisa Garnier

We are learning bank accounts and bank statements. Students are learning to read and analyze a sample bank statement. The goal is to understand deposits, withdrawals, fees, and so forth so that they are able to monitor their own accounts for accuracy and not overspend.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Students are continuing to evaluate where they are in life and where they want to go. We’ve been analyzing their Work/Play/Love/Health gauges to learn how they can find more balance in their lives. The ideas that work can also be play (something that produces joy for the sake of doing it) and that play can positively impact mental and spiritual health have been especially eye-opening.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Students are starting to turn in completed timesheets, and they are submitting weekly internship logs reflecting on their experiences on the job each week. They are also working on their initial professional development plans which will help them stay focused on what their “after THRIVE” goals are.

Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard

Our class meets in two different locations. Most students do well in keeping up with our schedule. We finished talking about cookies. We have been talking about what students want to learn to prepare. So we will be working on that in the future. Everyone works well together. We’ve been discussing the differences in kitchen ranges. I showed students how to take off the electric coils to clean the top. I’m also trying to be proactive and discuss what to do about burns.

Plato: Debra Southard

Students are working hard to complete Plato daily. Students are learning to manage their time. If students find their level of questions is too difficult it’s important they let me know. I can adjust that level some.
