Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
Classes for Fall Semester:
Students in the first year of our program will be enrolled in their classes a couple weeks after Spring Break.
Roommates for Fall Semester (1st-year students only):
All students have given their choices for roommates. THRIVE Staff will be going through their choices and then in Mid-April will let students and families know more information.
First-Year Students:
Lots of studying going on in the Collaboration Zone…
Learning Strategies: Debra Southard
Monday we discussed spring break, had students check their emails and respond, and passed out new schedules. Some of the students' schedules changed with 8-week classes starting. Students were given two new assignments.
Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning
Monday we discussed motivation and how different types of motivation can help us to be successful. The rest of the week we are updating our resumes and references. We have also been discussing what classes the students may want to take for the Fall 2023 semester.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS): Joni Shelton
We have shifted our focus this week from Healthy Habits to Professionalism and Work Ethics. Students identified where they see themselves 8 years from now and wrote out goals that will help them get there. They also wrote a paragraph as to their thoughts about work ethics and then created a Jam board with the characteristics of Professionalism.
Students in between classes and some studying going on…
Second-Year Students:
Notes from the Director:
Hello third-year families, We will be setting up individual meetings for students coming back for a third year in the coming week. Please watch for an email from me with the days/times.
Transition Planning II: Gary Manning
We continue the process of looking toward what the next couple of months is happening. This includes graduation from the THRIVE program, moving back to the student’s hometown, or the student coming back to UCM for a third year. All of these transitions are a change for the students and their families. The students and families have a lot of different resources available to them, please make sure you utilize the resources.
Just walking through the Union…
Internship II: Gary Manning
The students have been starting their professional portfolios. Within the portfolio, the students need a resume, cover letter, 3 reference letters, and any other documents that may help them in applying for a job.
The goal is for the student to start applying for jobs/summer jobs the first week in April. The students are looking at different classifieds/job searches to help with this process. The students and families need to also use outside resources to help with this process. For example Vocational Rehabilitation, Center for Human Resources, Board Services, etc…
Personal Finance II: Mrs. Garnier
After Spring Break, we finished our unit on Insurance (auto, health, life, disability). We reviewed for the insurance unit test using a Kahoot Game and students took the test at the end of the week.
Plato: Debra Southard
Students were not required to complete plato during spring break. But it was a time students were encouraged to get caught up if somewhere behind.

Third-Year Students:
Notes from the Director:
Hello third-year families, We will be setting up individual meetings for students coming back for a fourth year in the coming week. Please watch for an email from me with the days/times.
Transition Planning IV: Mrs. Garnier
Students eased back into things after break with a review of how to read job postings, how to recognize real postings from scam postings, and how to know if they are actually qualified for a specific job by comparing their skills and qualifications to those listed in the posting.
Internship IV: Mrs. Garnier
Students are now working on their second Internship Summary Reports. They are using their weekly internship logs to compose a 1-2 page paper discussing what they have done and learned in their internships since they completed their first summary.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
We reviewed some of the questions students worked on before spring break. We took notes on fruit. Students were given hopefully a fun assignment where they get to pick a recipe to make the included fruit. It could be fresh, frozen or canned. This can be as simple or complex as they want. Maybe a family favorite could be made. The recipe has to be approved by Mrs. Southard and the students have to shop for the ingredients. Some of the goals is for each student to prepare a different recipe so all the students can taste each other's creations. Students have to first shop on www.walmart.com and figure out the cost of the ingredients. Students have one week to purchase the items needed.
THRIVE Activities:
Softball practice is starting up…
