THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

The past few weeks have gone quickly.  It seems like just yesterday that families came and moved the students into the dorms.  The students are settling in and learning what college is about.  After some of the students went home for the first time, we heard from some families about some of the positive changes that they had seen.  This is great news about how the students are learning and adjusting to being more independent.

The weekend of the 15th and 16th of September will be a family weekend.  We will have our second home football game and the university will also have some family events.  We hope that you will be able to come and enjoy some of the activities.  THRIVE will also have some activities for you.  We will have a Family Meet N Greet from 9;30-11 on Saturday the 16th.  Then after a bit of a visit, the families and students can help decorate the THRIVE float for homecoming.  From 9-11 on Saturday the 16th, the Mentors will have things set up for you to decorate for our float.  This was one of the events that families had fun with the last two years.  We hope that we will see you there.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

Students have had two writing assignments. They are having a difficult time remembering to put their names and titles on their work. But I will keep reminding them. We practiced Google Meet and going virtual if someone is sick they can do that or during bad weather. Students also learned how to get their computers to read PLATO to them.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

This past week we discussed different types of relationships focusing on the characteristics of a good friend. We also started talking about the 8 Habits of Health and Wellness.

This past week we continued to practice utilizing Gmail to communicate with instructors, and how to use the Discussion board and submit assignments through Blackboard.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

3rd year students are creating workviews this week. We’ve been learning about how “work” is more than just making money and how our attitude can affect how we view the work we do whether it is a paid job, volunteer work, or keeping our living space habitable. Students are creating workviews this week to help them better understand what work means to them so they can better understand the function/role of work in their own lives.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

In addition to working internships, students have also been learning how to apply for jobs online at UCM. We will be learning about how the Office of Career and Life design can help them find jobs after they leave our program--be it summer/holiday work, internships, or full/ part-time employment.

4th Year Seminar/Portfolio: Lisa Garnier

The 4th year students are settling into their schedules really well. They are working hard at their classes and internships. They are putting together their budgets, and we will continue to follow those closely throughout the semester.

Plato: Debra Southard

First years are working hard but need to set a timer to keep track of their hours. The second years are doing fine.
