Blog for 10/15-11/3

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Friendly reminder:  Please refrain from calling students during class times.  Also, if you have concerns about your student please contact THRIVE staff to check on your student or for other information.  If you have any questions please contact Michael Brunkhorst at mbrunkhorst@ucmo.edu or your student's primary THRIVE teacher.

Students have been asked to choose their top 5 classes that they would like to take in the Spring.  Then staff will look to see what classes fit in their schedule and then discuss how each fit in their person-centered plan.  It would be a good idea to get with them in the next couple of weeks to see what they have thought about.  The team then goes and talks to the teachers about the class and makes sure they know about our THRIVE program.  Then 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th year students will be starting to think about their Spring semester internships.

Thanksgiving Break and Finals…

Information about Thanksgiving Break.  All students will need to be out of the Dorms by 6 p.m. on November 17th.  Then all students are due back to UCM on Sunday the 26th.  Dorms will open at noon.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This week we are discussing different ways people learn. Students completed the VARK assessment which determined each student's individual learning style. Many students did not use the activity app last week. Mrs Southard even put a reminder on students' calendars. If parents could discuss making sure students do that every week that would be very helpful.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

We continued our discussion about dating. We focused on the Stages of Dating relationships, and ideas for less expensive dates. We also discussed safety in dating situations. This coming week we will talk about values in dating, warning signs that the relationship is not healthy, and breaking up.

Technology Literacy:  Joni Shelton

This week students finished up their “All About Me” PowerPoint. This coming week students will present their PowerPoint to their classmates, focusing on presentation skills.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

Last week the students will discuss some of what they learned from their last assessment of this semester from Missouri Connections.  The hope is the students will be able to find other job possibilities and interests.  They will also start to think about their resume.  Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume, to add to their portfolio.

Just a little working out…

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing a lot about relationships and how to communicate in a relationship.  A relationship can be with your family, friends, roommates, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmates and co-workers.  Each relationship will be different and how you may communicate within that relationship.  The students are working on being a self-advocate within a relationship but doing this self-advocacy in a respectful manner.

Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard

Individual pizzas were the topic this week. Students made homemade pizza dough. It was a success! Students also reviewed all the requirements for food labels. We practiced reading some common food labels.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are working on resumes and cover letters.  The students are turning in their rough draft this week.  Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester.  By the time semester ends the students should know where their spring internship will be.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Students have finished their Odyssey plans and updated their mind maps

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Things are going well with all.

4th Year Seminar/Portfolio: Lisa Garnier

Students did a fantastic job interviewing someone in their field of interest and writing a paper about what they learned.

Plato:

This week all students selected two topics to start of their choice. If they did not pick Mrs. Southard picked for them. Hopefully, this week be topics of interest for each of them.
