THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

First-Year families.  In the next few weeks, the students will have their first job shadow opportunity.  For these job shadows, students will need to dress appropriately for the job shadows in casual dress.  If you’d make sure your student has appropriate clothing on campus for them to wear.  If you have any questions please give Dr. Manning an email and he can help you with this.

All families: This week (2/5-2/9), we will be having our first set of Family Interviews for next year’s possible cohort.  We have tried to make sure we have as many classes as we can but some classes will not meet.  The teachers will have alternative homework assignments that they can do on their own.  It’s suggested that they meet in small groups during their normal class times in the library, Collaboration Zone, etc.  This will help them stay on track and get the homework done that is assigned.  The last week of February we will do the same.

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

On Monday we finished up with Johnson County Community Health. Everyone earned their food handling license. Wednesday we talked about eggs and making omelets. We explained step by step how to make them. Students also had a planning sheet. Friday the 1st group went over and made omelets.

Food Handler’s License:

Omelettes anyone??  Our first year students made something in the kitchen last week.  We’ll

have the other group this week.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning

This week we started discussing job shadows for the semester.  Our first job shadow will be in a couple of weeks.  When the students job shadow at their locations, they need to dress appropriately, have good body language and not utilize their phones/technology.  I have suggested to the students to make sure that they appropriate clothes to wear to a job shadow.  We do not expect them to spend a lot of money on new clothes but the student may need to start thinking about professional clothes that they may need.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

We reviewed the importance of quality sleep, drinking plenty of water, and started reviewing healthy eating. We tied these topics to SMART Goals as students logged sleep and then wrote a SMART Goal to work towards good quality sleep, and then determined how much water they each should be drinking each day and wrote a SMART Goal to meet their hydration needs. Students are currently keeping track of their food and drink intake for a week.

Just studying…

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

This week the students are researching apartments within their hometown.  This has created some anxiety among some students.  The students know that finding an apartment needs to be realistic and they cannot afford an apartment that may cost them over $1500/month.  We also discussed having a roommate to split the cost.

Foods and Nutrition II: Lisa

We finished up our meal planning lesson and began learning about knife skills and how to do different cutting techniques like dicing, julienne, cubing, etc. We will be in the kitchen to practice soon on vegetables and making a vegetable salad.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing certain body language you need to have in a professional setting compared to the body language you may have when you are at home or with your friends.  We have also discussed observing social cues from other people and what those social cues may be.

It was a good week for Plato. Almost everyone completed theirs for the week.
