Director Notes: .
First-Year families:
Housing Agreements for Fall 2024: Hello Families, If you’d work with your students to fill out the Fall Housing Agreement. They are located on your student’s MyCentral Page. It’s on the left side towards the middle I believe. I’ll also be sending an email to families about giving us a Letter of Intent for next year. This helps us prepare for students.
All Families:
Please start talking with your students about Finals Week. Finals week is April 29- May 3rd this year. The link to the finals schedule is online at the following website.
For the most part, THRIVE Finals are on the following dates:
First-year:
Foods & Nutrition I; Wednesday 1-3 pm
Workplace & Community Skills: Monday 3:30-5:30
DILS- Thursday 3:30-5:30
PE- Doesn’t have a final during Finals week, they have their final the week previous.
For all Elective courses you’ll find times on the above doc/link. However, if the classes have projects, instead of finals, those times could be inaccurate. Also, if the student works with OAS, which we suggest for elective classes their times are then planned by the student and OAS.
Second Year:
Transition Planning: Scheduled individually.
Foods & Nutrition II: Wednesday 8-10.
PE- Doesn’t have a final during Finals week, they have their final the week previous.
All Elective courses you’ll find times on the above doc/link. However, if the classes have projects, instead of finals, those times could be inaccurate. Also, if the student works with OAS, which we suggest for elective classes their times are then planned by the student and OAS.
So it’s highly recommended you first talk to your student in the coming weeks. Typically 2 weeks before finals we ask the students to start planning and setting up times with OAS…Then we will double-check with students during the week prior to finals week that they have everything planned and organized.
Some students waiting to watch the eclipse…

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning
This week we finished up meeting in class. The students started their mock interviews on Wednesday. The students have the questions that will be asked during their interview. We have encouraged the students to practice with a friend or family. The interviews last about 20 minutes for the student. Very typical questions the student may be asked during a job interview.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS): Joni Shelton
This past week we started our unit on Personal Safety. On Tuesday two nurses from Johnson County Community Health shared videos, demonstrated, and led discussions about basic first aid, and how to react in an emergency situation. On Thursday students worked on a Personal Safety Nearpod lesson and Blackboard assignment.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: Gary Manning
We have been discussing a lot about what the next two weeks will be like and about the graduation ceremony. We can tell the students are excited but nervous for the transition in their lives and what the future may hold for them. We can also tell the parents may be getting nervous or frustrated with trying to figure out moving the students out of the dorms and also with the graduation ceremony on Saturday. Please let us know if you have any questions about those items.
Foods and Nutrition II: Lisa
We are preparing for a cookie bake-off and reviewing for the final exam.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students are finishing their professional portfolios. All students should have a resume, cover letter, 3 letters of recommendation, and their Professional Development Plan in their portfolio.
We also continue talking about interviewing skills to get ready for their mock interviews next week. One mock interview will be at the UCM Career Service Office. The other interview will be with the THRIVE staff as part of their final.
We also continue talking about applying for jobs for the summer or for jobs if the student is not coming back for a third year.
