Director Notes: .

First-Year families:

Housing Agreements for Fall 2024:  Hello Families, If you’d work with your students to fill out the Fall Housing Agreement.  They are located on your student’s MyCentral Page.  It’s on the left side towards the middle I believe.  I’ll also be sending an email to families about giving us a Letter of Intent for next year.  This helps us prepare for students.

All Families:

Please start talking with your students about Finals Week.  Finals week is April 29- May 3rd this year.  The link to finals schedule is online at the following website.

https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/office-of-the-registrar-and-student-records/dates-and-deadlines/final_exam_schedule.pdf

For the most part, THRIVE Finals are on the following dates:

First-year:

Foods & Nutrition I; Wednesday 1-3 pm

Workplace & Community Skills: Monday 3:30-5:30

DILS- Thursday 3:30-5:30

PE- Doesn’t have a final during Finals week, they have their final the week previous.

All Elective courses you’ll find times on the above doc/link.  However, if the classes have projects, instead of finals, those times could be inaccurate.  Also, if the student works with OAS, which we suggest for elective classes their times are then planned by the student and OAS.

Second Year:

Transition Planning: Scheduled individually.

Foods & Nutrition II: Wednesday 8-10.

So it’s highly recommended you first talk to your student in the coming weeks.  Typically 2 weeks before finals we ask the students to start planning and setting up times with OAS…Then we will double-check with students during the week prior to finals week that they have everything planned and organized.

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

Monday half the group made mac and cheese. Wednesday we canceled class because it was Founder's Day. Friday the other half of the class made mac and cheese. Students have shared an assignment to help them prepare for the final.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning

We finished up the semester with mock interviews. Each student met with Dr. Manning and answered questions that were discussed earlier with the class.

We would like for all students to get a summer job or volunteer at organizations within their community.   This will help the students when they come back in August to start their internships.  Working during the summer will help the students to continue working on soft skills and job skills that we have discussed this semester.  As a THRIVE staff, we have noticed in the past, that the students who had jobs or volunteer before their internships started, usually do well at their internships.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

We had our final Nearpod lesson on Tuesday. The lesson was Household Chores. It included safe and sanitary kitchen practices and general cleaning tips. On Thursday we finished up our Personal Safety unit by discussing having an emergency plan, communicating that plan with family and roommates, and what to have in an emergency preparedness kit. We finished up the hour with time for questions and review for the final. The final for DILS will be Thursday, May 2, at 3:30 pm. It has been a pleasure working with this group of students this year, and I know they have a great future ahead of them.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

This was the last week of classes.  There was a lot of happiness and sadness within the students.  They have been in this program for two years, making relationships, doing activities together and attending classes.  There has been a lot of growth for each student.  However, as we discuss in class everyone will continue to grow, learn and experience new things throughout our lives.  I am very proud of each one of these students in their development and learning.

Foods and Nutrition II: Lisa

Our Foods and Nutrition II class finished out the semester with a cookie bake-off. Eight teams of 2 students each went head to head baking Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Chocolate-Chocolate Chip, and Sugar cookies. Cookies were judged by THRIVE partners across campus and the winners were announced at the end-of-semester awards party. The winners of the competition were: 1st Place went to Jessica Vaugn and Benny Tripp for their chocolate chip cookies, 2nd Place went to Lena Weeks and Alec Luke for their chocolate-chocolate chip cookies, and 3rd Place went to David Stark and Jake Woofter for their peanut butter cookies.

Internship I: Gary Manning

This was the last week of internships for most of the students.  The students did very well in their internships.  They developed new skills and interests at their internships.  The students know that they need to continue to develop their existing skills and develop new skills.  The students also realize that having a job can be difficult but rewarding.  I am excited to see what the future will bring to these students.

 A few students hanging out…
