Director Notes:
Softball Read the new information below in our activities section. We had our first two softball games last Thursday night, and we have our last game this Thursday at 6 pm.
First-Year families:
Housing Agreements for Fall 2024: Hello Families, If you’d work with your students to fill out the Fall Housing Agreement. They are located on your student’s MyCentral Page. It’s on the left side towards the middle I believe. I’ll also be sending an email to families about giving us a Letter of Intent for next year. This helps us prepare for students.
All Families:
Please start talking with your students about Finals Week. Finals week is April 29- May 3rd this year. The link to the finals schedule is online at the following website.
For the most part, THRIVE Finals are on the following dates:
First-year:
Foods & Nutrition I; Wednesday 1-3 pm
Workplace & Community Skills: Monday 3:30-5:30
DILS- Thursday 3:30-5:30
PE- Doesn’t have a final during Finals week, they have their final the week previous.
For all Elective courses, you’ll find times on the above doc/link. However, if the classes have projects, instead of finals, those times could be inaccurate. Also, if the student works with OAS, which we suggest for elective classes their times are then planned by the student and OAS.
Second Year:
Transition Planning: Scheduled individually.
Foods & Nutrition II: Wednesday 8-10.
So it’s highly recommended you first talk to your student in the coming weeks. Typically 2 weeks before finals we ask the students to start planning and setting up times with OAS…Then we will double-check with students during the week prior to finals week that they have everything planned and organized.
First-Year Students:
Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard
This week we are making pizza snacks, students will make the dough from scratch. We practiced rolling out the dough using playdough. Students had some questions to answer while practicing for the final. It will be a written exam.
Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning
This week we worked on cover letters. Students finished up their third job shadowing and met with Dr. Manning about Fall 2024 internships. The students had to give five locations for their internship. It was explained to the students that they may not get their first choice of their internship location. However, they may get that location in the spring semester. The internships are for the whole semester. The student will work between 8 - 12 hours per week at their internship.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS): Joni Shelton
Last week we continued our discussion about jobs, we explored Hard Skills vs. Soft Skills, Transferable Skills vs. Non-Transferable, and Skills vs Talents. Students also completed another Nearpod lesson, this one titled “Thriving on the Job”.
Some were at their Job Shadows, so a smaller class…
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: Gary Manning
We have been discussing what the students can do this summer on how they continue to develop their responsibility and independence. This includes doing activities on their own, with their families and friends. Further, we want the students to try and get jobs over the summer, volunteer or do an internship. It is important that the students and their families continue to use vocational rehab and outside resources to help the students.
Foods and Nutrition II: Lisa
This week we learned about nutrients in beef, how to cook various cuts of beef, and healthy serving sizes. In the kitchen, we made Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Skillet Casserole. When not in the kitchen, they completed a worksheet on identifying different cooking methods for meat, such as roasting, broiling, grilling, and so forth.

Students will arrive about 30 minutes before game time to practice and warm up. Then the games begin. I’ll keep you posted with pictures and updates. If weather causes a delay or cancellation I’ll use Facebook to update families. If you are planning on coming down please get with your student the day of the game between 3-5.
