Director Notes:
A reminder of the Family Weekend coming up on September 28th. We will have a Family Meet N Greet starting at 9:30. The mentors will also have one of the bigger draws for the morning in the 1270 classroom. They have prepared the templates for the float and families can help finish the float for us. Don’t miss this time. There are more activities at the following link…
https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/student-experience/special-events/family-weekend/
The mentors are already getting the float theme ready for families to finish up…
Also, for 2nd and 3rd-year families. Since they are working on their independence please let them get to class on their own and have fewer conversations about what they need to do. Sometimes it’s a good experience to have to be late to class or internship. We’ve all had those days. We know they can do it but it will take practice.
Lots more pictures on Facebook. If you haven’t joined our page, please go to THRIVE - UCM and you can see more of what our students are doing. Families don’t forget to ask if your son/daughter has signed up for intramural sports. We have five that we’ve posted on our lobby wall. They have until September 6th for three of them and until September 13th on the other two. We’ll have more up in October…
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
This week we are talking about two men who had to overcome their disabilities. Students wrote about their thoughts and created a jam board. We talked about time management and ways to get back on track once they catch themselves wondering. Several students have difficulty remembering to include their name and title on homework. We have discussed this daily during class and in our weekly meetings. Students are asked to redo the assignments.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
We started our week talking about Gossip, how to recognize gossip, and what to do to prevent getting caught up in gossip. On Wednesday we shifted gears and discussed one of the 8 habits for overall health and wellness with a discussion of Hydration and getting enough water each day this included the sources of water in our diet, and the benefits of drinking plenty of water, we did a math problem to determine how much water each student should be drinking a day, read about making smart beverage choices and then student wrote SMART goals to improve their water intake. On Friday we completed a Nearpod lesson on the importance of good hygiene and cleanliness.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This last week staff will assist the students in helping them keep personal information safe and secure when using the internet. Mrs. Southard, Dr. Manning and Mr. B will be taking the time to share experiences.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This week we discussed the student's talents and how those talents may go along with what the student may be interested in doing for a career. We also started discussing picking five elective classes for the spring semester.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We are discussing getting outside our comfort zones and trying new things. This is hard for some of us as individuals. We like being secure and comfortable. We have had a student try out for the talent show on campus and we have another student going to run the color run on campus. Further, we are discussing things we cannot control and why we let these things bother us. We can control our attitude and how we try our best but we cannot control what other individuals do.
Internship I: Gary Manning
In class, we have been discussing when you have a job on how organized you will need to be. Further, we talk about time management and have a plan for the day, week, and month. We discussed having a planner on how to use the planner to be organized and to make sure you do not overlap meetings, classes, work and doing school work.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
This week we worked with the air fryers. We made potato skin appetizers. We identified the difference between twice-baked potatoes and potato skins. Talked about the many ways to make potatoes and some of the steps involved.
Martin in his elective class. Way to go Martin…
Third-Year Students:
Mrs. Garnier will be out for a week due to family obligations. THRIVE staff will be covering her classes this coming week.
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
The students will continue to work through Chapter 2, then start Chapter 3 on Wayfinding. Learning different ways to learn about their life goals.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Internships went fine. More to come next week.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
This week the students will be learning about meal planning and meal preparations. We’ll be looking at different ways students can better prepare to grocery shop. Mr. B will be helping this week, we’ll see how his past grocery managing experience will help….
Plato: Debra Southard:
All students have two new topics. The first two were Career Exploration and Exercise Science. The two new ones are topics each student selected for themselves. I did ask students to complete the first week of the new ones. If after that they don't feel that was the best choice for them they could select a different topic to learn about. All students still have Language arts, math, and reading.
THRIVE/Mentor Activities:
The mentor activity this past week had the students play kickball with Jamee was changed to Game Night due to rain.
