To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
Midterm week is here… Week 8: (October 7-11). This is when some classes have a midterm assessment. THRIVE staff will also be putting together a Midterm report that we will send to both the students and parents about their progress. We would typically send these reports out by email the following week, this year, however, we have a Fall Break that is from October 17th through the 20th, the dorms are open during this time. So students will not have classes on Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th. We will plan on getting the reports out by the 21st.
Lots more pictures on Facebook. If you haven’t joined our page, please go to THRIVE - UCM and you can see more of what our students are doing. Families don’t forget to ask if your son/daughter has signed up for intramural sports. We have five sign-up sheets in the THRIVE lobby for different activities that the students can do. Three of them are in the Rec Center and the other two are related to Homecoming week.
Homecoming week is October 21st-27th. During this week there are various activities around campus. The students will be assisting with making the Float, Spirit Window, Blood Drive (if wanted), and other activities. There is a parade that students participate in on Saturday the 26th in the morning. Then there is the game against Washburn in the early afternoon. We’d highly recommend that if you are looking at coming to campus this would be a great time. The whole community comes out for the Homecoming Parade and festivities.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
First years this week are finishing up the book Step by Step. We are talking about test taking. Helpful hints to do well on tests is the subject. We discussed Acronyms and ways to help remember important facts. Plagiarism and what to do after a test.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
This week we finished up our lesson on Conflict Resolution. We then had a discussion about Harassment, focusing on sexual harassment. Then we moved on to discussions about Love vs. Infatuation. On Friday, guest presenters from Warrensburg Area Career Center’s LPN program presented to students the importance of hand washing and other protections against the spread of germs.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week our 1st year students presented their slide shows about themselves to the class. They created slide presentations with either PowerPoint or Google Docs entitled “All About Me.” I was very pleased with how well they did!
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
We also discussed how their first two Missouri Connections assessment data can help them look for potential job opportunities. The students were able to see what jobs/careers matched both of the assessments and then they were asked to circle any additional jobs they thought were interesting.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We are in the process of selecting courses for the spring semester. The students need to select five courses that they may be interested in taking. The courses need to be a face-to-face course and a course that may help them in their future plans. Students may take more than one elective course if the student would like to. I have suggested the students talk to their families about the course selection.
Internship I: Gary Manning
We continue to stress job skills and being professional at your job. The students are doing well in their skills. Some of the biggest items the students have problems with is using their phone at their job when they are not supposed to. Students also get distracted and may socialize too much. We talk about the difference between having good customer service skills and socializing too much with the customers
Katie at KMOS…
Gabe working hard at Volleyball…
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
Meal planning was the subject this week. Some students have difficulty following instructions either on a worksheet or in a recipe. So we are working on those skills as well. Students had daily homework assignments this week.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Students spent the week working on their midterm papers. One of the papers is an evaluation of their work/play/health/love gauges, how balanced they are, and what they can do to improve that life balance. The second paper is a summary of their work views and life views and how they complement each other, clash with each other, and changes they can make to bring them more into agreement.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Our students continue to do well in their internships.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
We made breakfast casseroles, and students took their midterm exam online in Blackboard.
Plato: Debra Southard:
Most students are doing a great job with completing weekly assignments in plato. I would like to see them work on increasing their mastery.
