THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Spring Class Enrollment is coming soon.  The Students have shared with staff their top 5 choices for their elective for the Spring Semester.  It would be good to talk to your son/daughter, if you haven’t already done so, to see what they are interested in.  THRIVE staff will then go over their choices and see how it fits in their Person-Centered Plan (Interests or career goals).  They will also see if their are any conflicts between THRIVE classes and if they have any prerequisites that would not let them take the classes.  Then THRIVE staff will  talk to the student’s once a final decision is made.  They are one of the first groups able to enroll.

THRIVE staff are working on the Midterm reports that we will send to both the student and parents about their progress.  We would typically send these reports out by email the following week, this year, however we have a Fall Break that is October 17th through the 20th.  So students will not have classes on Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th.  We will plan on getting the reports out by the 21st.

Homecoming week is October 21st-27th.  During this week there are various activities around campus.  The students will be assisting with making the Float, Spirit Window, Blood Drive (if wanted), and other activities.  There is a parade that students participate in on Saturday the 26th in the morning.  Then there is the game against Washburn in the early afternoon.  We’d highly recommend that if you are looking at coming to campus this would be a great time.  The whole community comes out for the Homecoming Parade and festivities.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This week we are finishing up with the Step by step book. Monday students received the mid term review. Students worked on it and made plans to meet again to study.  Students also had a writing assignment. The mid term test was Friday.

Getting ready for Midterms…

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

On Friday, Oct. 4 students from Warrensburg Area Career Center’s LPN program presented to the students about proper hand washing and other techniques to prevent the spread of germs. On Monday, Oct. 7 UCM’s Care to Act volunteers presented information about Relantional Violence. Wednesday was the Mid-Term exam, and on Friday we continued our discussion about violence in dating relationships with a movie “But He Loves Me”. Following the movie students are working in small groups to create a list of 10 warning signs of a toxic dating relationship to present in class this Wednesday.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students did a great job presenting their slide shows about themselves! We are now working on an assignment that practices paragraph writing skills. The assignment is to write 3 paragraphs discussing where they see themselves, or where they would like to be, in 10, 20, and 30 years.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

In last week's Career Exploration class we went over their last Missouri Connections assessment.  We talked about personalities and what is valued in their lives. This helps them look at another aspect of work.  It’s not just all about the money.  To continue to maintain good employment we like for the students to look at what really matters to them.

Just Hangin’ out…

Second-Year Students:

A little PE time…

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing a lot about relationships and how to communicate in a relationship.  A relationship can be with your family, friends, roommates, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmates and co-workers.  Each relationship will be different and how you may communicate within that relationship.  The students are working on being a self-advocate within a relationship but doing this self-advocacy in a respectful manner.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are working on resumes and cover letters.  The students are turning in their rough draft this week.  Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester.  By the time semester ends the students should know where their spring internship will be.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard

Monday we worked on a review sheet and discussed the last assignment. Mrs Southard gave students extra time on that assignment. Wednesday we discussed redoing the potato lab the following week. Friday was the mid term test.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Students are deciding what classes they want to take in the spring semester. I am encouraging them to choose courses that will provide them with knowledge that can be used in their area of interest and in the workforce in general.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

I’m getting very good reports from internship supervisors.

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

We learned about healthy, simple meals for college students this week. This included recipes and pantry staples that can be used in a variety of meals. We discussed cooking and freezing items like chicken and ground beef in advance to time in preparing meals later and keeping fresh frozen vegetables and mixes (Bird’s Eye Chicken and cheesy rice for example) on hand for quicker meals.

Plato: Debra Southard:

Most students are really rockin PLATO! Parents might remind students to set timers when they are working on each subject.
