Director Notes:
Winter Break:
1st-Year: First-Year students leave on Friday, December 6th by 6 pm. These students will have finals December 2nd-6th. It’s suggested that families get with their son/daughter during Thanksgiving break to see when they can be picked up. Typically they will have a final on Friday the 6th. There is a checkout procedure for this, and the students will have to sign up for a time to get checked out before leaving. This will need to be followed or a fee can be assessed. The students do not move out completely. Just take items that they need over the break.
2nd-Year: Second-year students have finals the week of December 9th-13th. Students must have a checkout time before 6 pm on Friday the 13th. It’s suggested that families get with their son/daughter during Thanksgiving break to see when they can be picked up. Finals vary, so get with your son/daughter about when they are done with finals and their internship. 3rd-Year:
Third-year students are different and they will receive instructions on signing out or other procedures by email. Please have your son/daughter read their emails and then over Thanksgiving break plan when they are coming home. They have finals the week of December 9th-13th. Finals vary, so get with your son/daughter about when they are done with finals and their internship.
Spring Roommates: Hello Families,we let students know of any room changes in their Monday or Tuesday class, last week. We asked that the students get with their roommates to see about any needs that the room has with the move. Then we asked that they get with their families so they knew if there were any items that needed to go home before Thanksgiving Break. We asked that any doubles of TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges be taken home for Thanksgiving Break. This will help in the moves that will happen the week they get back from Thanksgiving Break. The moves will happen on Tuesday (Guys) and Wednesday (Gals).
First-Year Students:
Some students are ready for the holidays…
Learning Strategies: Debra Southard
This week we have talked about how to highlight in textbooks. We discussed how to select what is important in a chapter. One day we looked up the chapter terms and explained that term to everyone else in class. Friday during class all students completed the discussion board so they would not have that to do while on Thanksgiving break. Students do need to finish up an assignment during break. All students have started. Some have already submitted their “MY STORY”. In the last few weeks, they have been assigned short writing assignments that now can be cut and pasted into this larger assignment about themselves. I told them they had a choice: I could give them a topic to research and write about or they could write about themselves. They all choose the latter!! And of course, I didn't want them to tell me anything they didn't want to share. What they put in the paper was up to them.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
On Monday of this past week, we reviewed information about male and female reproduction systems including parts, functions, and concerns. On Wednesday we had a presentation from Care to Act about substance use. On Friday, we continued our discussion about reproduction talking about conception, fertilization, and pregnancy. Students were also given a study guide in preparation for their semester final which will be given on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Students have been hard at work finishing their iMovie trailers for their final project in Tech Lit. I’ve watched a couple already, and they are looking good! They have all had fun with them.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This week the students had a work day to get support on their resumes to help them get finished up and ready for the families to look at and review over Thanksgiving break. The resume is their final for this class. They will need to turn in their professional resume by Dec. 6th.
First-years just hanging out…
Second-Year Students:
Martin is doing some great welding work…
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week in class we prepared for the final on Dec. 9th. The students received a study guide sheet a couple of weeks ago. We continue to review by using that study guide. If the students know the study guide they will do well on the test.
We also started preparing to leave campus for the semester break. This process can be stressful for the students. We talked over the break not to get too lazy and continue to do your own laundry, work a part-time job, volunteer within your community, and help your parents around the house.
Internship I: Gary Manning
We have been preparing for the students' mock interview. The students received some interview questions a couple of weeks ago. This should have helped the students start to formulate answers to questions that they may have to answer during an interview process. Further, we discuss what type of clothes you should wear to an interview, what time you should show up, and what materials you should have with you or not bring to an interview (No cell phones, or ear pods) The mock interview is the students’ final in internship class.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
Monday we discussed cuts and grades of meat. We also planned to make beef stroganoff. Wednesday we met in Grinstead and worked hard preparing the stroganoff. The students did a great job. Friday we went over the Kahoots that included questions on the mid-term. We also planned out and voted as to how we wanted to handle the last week of class. Students decided that each group would pick out a cookie bar recipe. We would all share the treats with classmates. So everyone would get to taste four different recipes. Similar to what some families and clubs do during the holidays.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
We talked about reframing how we look at failures. The main point I wanted them to understand is that it’s possible to never fail at anything. As long as we learn something, we cannot fail. It’s how we react to outcomes, not the outcomes themselves that dictate how we perceive them, positively or negatively. They working on wrapping their heads around that.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Students continue to do well. They are currently updating resumes with their current internship experiences.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
We talked about baking this week. This included types of baked goods, types of doughs and batters, and the difference between a dough and a batter. We made brownies, which did not turn out well because it turns out I made a calculation error when scaling down the recipe. We learned a valuable lesson on the importance of accurate measurements.
