THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Spring Roommates:  Hello Families, we also, just like other UCM students, allow students to ask to change roommates, within the THRIVE program.  I’ve sent out a Google form to each of the 1st- and 2nd-year students.  In it they are asked if they want to change roommates or stay the same.  Then to give their top 5 choices.  They don’t have to change…  Some years we only have a couple that want to move, some years we have had more…  just depends.  We want them to fill out the form by Friday.  Then THRIVE staff will look at the results and work on roommate options for the Spring.  The week before Thanksgiving Break, we will let the students know if they were changed or not and what roommates they will have.  Then each student will be asked to get with the new roommate to see if they have duplicate items (Mini-Fridge, TV, Microwave, etc).  This will help students move things home that they don’t need.  Then the week they get back from Thanksgiving break THRIVE staff and Mentors will help them move.  I’ll work out a system so that typically Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday some of the students move and we are done by Thursday.  This way they are in the room they will be at in the Spring semester.

First-Year Students:

Elective Class… Bowling…

Learning Strategies: Debra Southard

We are working on learning to answer questions at the end of chapters and breaking down the steps. Students wrote about three characteristics they are proud of while practicing their writing skills. Students are working on their time management skills planning out their day and time to do assignments.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Our students are writing a 5 paragraph essay about the accessibility features on their phones. They were given links to lists of features for iPhone and for Android, and they chose 2 to 3 features they found interesting or that they thought would be helpful for them. The paper describes the features, why they found them interesting or helpful, and why other people might find them useful.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

The student will need to start thinking about their resume.  Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume.  This week we worked on the heading of their resume.  Next week they are going to work on their education experience.

Second-Year Students:

Elective class work…way to go Martin…

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

Last week we continued to work on budgets and money.  The students had a couple of scenarios they had to work through to figure out how much money they were spending and also how much money they would make if they worked so many hours per week making an hourly wage

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students will have their first mock interview during finals week. The students will need to dress professionally, act professional, and communicate in a professional way.  Further, the students will need to bring in a professional resume and be prepared for the interview.  I told the students not to go out and buy new clothes.  I am sure the students have clothes in their closets that they can use for professional dress.

  • The students' internships will be done during the week of finals.  The students are supposed to coordinate with their supervisor to finalize a date on when their last day will be.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard

Fruit is the topic this week. Wednesday students met in Grinstead and made fruit salad. They are great cleaners. All students had a word search to complete.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

We are continuing to evaluate what things in our daily schedules are engaging and energizing and what things aren’t. The goal is to develop a schedule that balances the enjoyable (ex: a class that they are engaged in) and the not-so-enjoyable (ex: homework).

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Our students continue to do well at their internships and are enjoying the work they do!

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

We were back in the kitchen this week. The students made a delicious Chicken Fajita Pasta dish. They have also completed two cooking videos where they record themselves making a dish in their apartments. There is one more video due at the end of the semester, but I’m pleased to see they are able to prepare real food in their own kitchens!
