THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  Please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar to keep updated on what's coming up.  Also, if you want to learn more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Well, it looks like winter decided to come back last week.  First-year students will also be discussing and getting ready for their first job shadow.  These job shadows help them see what possible internships they would like to do next year.  We look forward to some great conversations over the next few weeks.

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

We have started working in the kitchens in Grinstead. Half of the students made monkey bread and the other half was given an assignment to work on. Monday students will switch places. The other half worked in the kitchens and the other half worked on a measurement worksheet. Students worked hard to earn their Food Handlers Licence. Thanks to Tiffany Klassen at Johnson County County Health Services.

Look what they earned…  Food Handlers Licence…

First cooking in the Kitchen… Monkey Bread anyone?

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning & Mrs. Southard

We talked about Intrinsic and extrinsic Motivation. How motivation affects a person's job performance was discussed.  Wednesday's class was interrupted by a snow day. This week students were shown how to look at fall classes on the website. Students were to pick 5 classes they would be interested in. Dr Manning will talk to each student individually to narrow their choices. Why they want to take that class will be discussed. Also, the class would have to fit into their fall schedule.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

This week we continued our NearPod lesson series with Leadership Skills and Creative Problem Solving. These online lessons provide information and a chance for students to self-reflect, share in pairs, and share with the class their thoughts in each area.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

We have been discussing problem-solving skills and how you have to use these skills in a job and everyday life.  We have also been discussing different scenarios with co-workers and soft skills.

The students also had an assignment on Jobs/Internships after graduating in May.  The students had to submit five locations on what jobs/internships they may want to apply for back in their home area.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students are updating their resumes and working with the UCM Career Service Office on their resumes this week and next week.  The students also have to write about their internships.  They have to write about what they have learned at their internship and what is challenging for them at their internship.

Personal Finance I:  Lisa Garnier

We are learning about budgeting for housing, including what it actually costs to rent an apartment besides just monthly rent (fees, deposits, etc.). Budgeting for transportation was also discussed from the cost of buses, taxis, Ubers, and maintaining a car. Finally, we covered the importance of having a mode of transportation easily accessible from where they live.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning IV: Lisa Garnier

During the budgeting unit in this class, we are covering the same topics as in personal finance. There is about 2 weeks of overlap. These students will be going into more detail including how to find an apartment in the area they plan to live and constructing a budget that would allow them to afford to live on their own.

Internship IV: Lisa Garnier

Everyone is working hard and seems to be doing quite well at this time.
