THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  Please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar to keep updated on what's coming up.  Also, if you want to learn more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Well, it looks like winter decided to come back last week.  First-year students will also be discussing and getting ready for their second job shadow.  These job shadows help them see what possible internships they would like to do next year.  We look forward to some great conversations over the next few weeks.

Students will also be looking at what classes they would like to take.  They will be asked to choose their top 5 classes.  Then staff will look at what fits into their schedule and have some discussions with the students over the next few weeks.

Families we also need your help with next year.  If you haven’t sent me a letter of intent, please have your student do so.  This will help us get ready for next year.  Also, the students will need to fill out the Housing Agreement for next Fall.  It’s in their MyCentral.  If you want us to help them please email us and we can work with them.

Graduation: We will be sharing some times with our 2nd-year families in the coming weeks pertaining to graduation.  We are finalizing some of our dates this week.  Watch for emails.

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

Monday, we discussed this week's recipe, Funnel cake. Not exactly a low-calorie dish and should only eat it once in a while. So far we have made energy bites, omelets, monkey bread, and believe it or not healthy mini banana splits. We discussed the mid-term and did Kahoots. We premeasured the dry ingredients for the recipe. Wednesday and Friday students met over in the kitchens. Students also had a mid-term and a review.

Wow, what a cook…

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning & Mrs. Southard

This week we discussed motivation, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills and how these skills can help us to be successful.   We have also been discussing what classes the students may want to take for the Fall 2024 semester.

Some Team Building going on…

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

This week, before Spring Break, students had their Midterm to complete, which was a paper sharing 3 SMART goals for this year, and discussing how the  4 NearPod topics: Self-Determination, Nonverbal Communication, Leadership and Creative Problem Solving play into each of their goals. Then we started discussing workplace behaviors. Tuesday we discussed Work Ethics and Integrity. On Thursday our topics were Professionalism and Constructive Criticism. Students have assignments on Blackboard for Work Ethics and Professionalism that will be due the week they return from Spring Break.

Some students helped with the KMOS pledge drive this past week…  Way to go!

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

We continue the process of looking towards what the next couple of months are happening.  This includes graduation from the THRIVE program, moving back to the students’ hometown, or the student coming back to UCM for a third year.  All of these transitions are a change for the students and their families.  The students and families have a lot of different resources available to them, please make sure you utilize the resources.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students have been starting their professional portfolios.  Within the portfolio,o the students need a resume, cover letter, 3 reference letters, and any other documents that may help them in applying for a job.

The goal is for the student to start applying for jobs/summer jobs the first week in April.  The students are looking at different classifieds/job searches to help with this process.  The students and families need to also use outside resources to help with this process.  For example Vocational Rehabilitation, Center for Human Resources, Board Services, etc…

Some major internships this past week.  MIAA time… and KMOS Telethon…

UCM Athletics:

Basketball just finished up their last home game.  We hope they can do well in the upcoming MIAA tournament.  We have a couple of students in the 2nd year who went to the tournament as part of their class.  Baseball will hopefully be a bit warmer so our students can go watch.
