THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  Please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar to keep updated on what's coming up.  Also, if you want to learn more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Well, it looks like winter decided to come back last week.  First-year students will also be discussing and getting ready for their first job shadow.  These job shadows help them see what possible internships they would like to do next year.  We look forward to some great conversations over the next few weeks.

Spring Break-Coming up March 8-16.  Students will need to leave the dorms by 6 pm on March 7th.  I’ve asked that the students get with their families to see about picking them up.  First-year students should be finished with their classes by 3 pm.  If they have their CIT meetings they will need to get with their counselor.  The Second-& Third-year students will need to look at their internships for that week as well as classes.  If you have further questions please get with Mrs. Southard, Dr. Manning, or Mrs. Garnier.  I will be sending out a Google form this Friday for them to fill out so we know when they are leaving.  If your student doesn’t contact you by Wednesday please give them a call and talk about this with them.

Students will also be looking at what classes they would like to take.  They will be asked to choose their top 5 classes.  Then staff will look at what fits into their schedule and have some discussions with the students over the next few weeks.

Families we also need your help with next year.  If you haven’t sent me a letter of intent, please have your student do so.  This will help us get ready for next year.  Also, the students will need to fill out the Housing Agreement for next Fall.  It’s in their MyCentral.  If you want us to help them please email us and we can work with them.

Graduation: We will be sharing some times with our 2nd-year families in the coming weeks pertaining to graduation.  We are finalizing some of our dates this week.  Watch for emails.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning & Mrs. Southard

The students did their 1st job shadow this week.  We have discussed how the students need to act and how to dress for their job shadows.  The students will do two more job shadows this semester.

We also discussed problem-solving skills and how many decisions/problems the students have to make every day.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

This week we finished up the Nearpod series by finishing the Creative Problem Solving lesson. We then reviewed the concepts from all 4 Nearpod lessons: Self-Determination, Nonverbal Communication, Leadership, and Creative Problem Solving. Students then practiced identifying problems and using these skills to rewrite some scenarios in which there was conflict. Students are preparing for their midterm next week by also reviewing SMART Goals.

Getting ready for their elective class on Friday morning…

Looks like they are getting their steps in…

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

The students are getting excited about spring break.  However, we have asked the students to start looking for jobs.  Therefore, the students may be asking about locating applications and different locations.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students did a workshop at the UCM Career Service Office.  This partnership that we developed with each other has benefited our students.  The students will begin utilizing the resources at the Career Service Office.  Those resources include interview skills, resume building, mock interviews, and professional dress attire.

The students also had Title IX training this week during class.

Personal Finance I:  Lisa Garnier

We will have more to add next week.  The students are getting ready for their midterm which will be this week.

UCM Athletics:

Basketball just finished up their last home game.  We hope they can do well in the upcoming MIAA tournament.  We have a couple of students in the 2nd year who will be going to the tournament as part of their class.  Baseball will hopefully be a bit warmer so our students can go watch.
