Blog 4/28 Almost the last Blog of the year...

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  Please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar to keep updated on what's coming up.  Also, if you want to learn more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Moving day is coming soon… Hello families, please start talking with your son/daughter about when their last Final is… This can lead to a discussion of when you can pick them up.  Students will have to sign up for a time to be checked out by the CA before they can leave.  The students will be able to start signing up for this about a week prior to finals week.  We will start to talk to students in a couple of weeks.  But, students have to know when you are picking them up so that they can sign up for an appropriate time.  Their room has to be cleaned and empty, like it was when they moved in, at their slotted checkout time.  An email from me went out to families on Thursday afternoon to help explain the process more.

Graduation: Is coming up fast.  Please finish the Google form or update if you have more or fewer people coming.  We’ve also started sharing our THRIVE Focus on our Graduates on Facebook.  Please watch our Facebook page for features on our graduates.  What a great time of year!

Parents, please make sure you finish filling out the form to let Mr. B know how many of your family will be coming to Graduation.

All Families:  We are also in Week 13, yes, we only have a few more weeks of school left.  All students will have finals during finals week.  Please get with them on when their finals and internships are done.  The students don’t have classes at their normal times, so each student’s final times will be different.  We will try to start having discussions with the students so that they can put their final times on their calendars in the next week or so.  We like for students who are done early in the week to leave fairly soon afterward.  During Finals week, it’s quiet hour all day…  so that those who still have finals have a quiet time to study.

Another great time in THRIVE…  We are now a 4-year CTP as well as a 2-year.  We will have more in the coming weeks as we work on getting this going on campus.  You can read more about it at the following link…  https://www.ucmo.edu/news/04-15-25-thrive.php

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

This is mac and cheese week. On Monday and Wednesday, students will go to the kitchens in Grinstead and make Mac and Cheese from scratch. Friday, we discussed the final and the last labs. The review for the final has been open all week on Blackboard.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning & Mrs. Southard

The students did their mock interviews over the past week. We also discussed their fall internships

Daily Independent Living Skills - Joni Shelton

On Tuesday, we did a NearPod lesson about safety in our community and while traveling. On Thursday, we moved on to a lesson about managing our own medical care. I shared the website “Got Transition” with students and we talked about steps to take in managing their own medical care, which included completing a Health Care Summary and Emergency Plan. Students may be contacting parents for information to complete these. They will either be completing this on paper, online or on an “Medical ID” app on their phone.

Mrs. Southard also had another group sit in one of our classes, which is for students learning more about special education and teaching.  The students were on a panel to help answer questions.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

We are getting ready for the last week of classes and finals.  The students' final in this class will be on Monday, May 2nd. The students this week in class did the ARC assessment and the PSI assessment.  These two assessments give us data on how the students are growing as individuals in being independent and responsible.    Further, the data shows us how students are using problem-solving skills and how they make choices.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students did very well in their mock interviews at the Career & Life Design Center.  The students will have an exit interview with the Thrive staff during this past week.  We have been discussing this interview during class time.

KMOS Awards Banquet, two of our students received awards: Ronan received the THRIVE Internship of the year, and Katie received runner-up.  Great job to both of you…

Personal Finance I:  Lisa Garnier

We are learning how to recognize scams and fraud as part of our Consumer Skills unit. The big lesson is to recognize two red flags: 1) An urgent/immediate request for money, and 2) asking for personal information.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning IV: Lisa Garnier

We started working on our self-management unit. We are currently learning about the 8 dimensions of wellness, completing a wellness wheel, and working on how we can improve our 8 dimensions. This is a program from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) that teaches how to maintain a wellness balance in our lives.

Internship IV: Lisa Garnier

Students are gathering recommendation letters and have begun to submit updated resumes.
